Default GearBox Fault - Dealer cannot update software

Hey folks. Have had the big yellow warning "GearBox Fault" on my 2014 V6s a few times, so took it to the dealership to fix. There is a TSB about a software update so figure no worries. Here's the thing - the dealer scanned the car and they detected a P167F-00 code. So, assume someone at some point tuned the car? Sure doesn't feel tuned, but anyways...

Dealer doesn't want to update the software for fear of this causing trouble and bricking the car. New ECU is $4K CDN direct from the UK.

Any suggestions? I'd hate to get stuck out cruising with a gearbox fault....but a $4k repair (I assume plus labour) is huge for me.

Thanks.

It may not be tuned. If someone applied a tune then flashed back to stock, the P167F-00 code would still be there. I have had updates applied in such a state and it worked, but I *knew* it was back to stock. The most common tune is VAP. Maybe a polite inquiry with them to see if your VIN is on record there would be worthwhile.

Other than that, I see your options as leave as-is, have the dealer update the software and if it bricks the ECU, replace then, or bite the bullet up front and replace the ECU.

If you bought it used from a private party ask them if they tuned it and if they left it tuned or reverted it back to stock before it was sold to you. If it is currently on the stock tune you should have the dealer do the update. If tuned the person who tuned it should have the flasher with the original tune that can be used to refresh the stock tune. If you bought it from a dealer and it was certified I would complain that they missed it and they should make you whole.

You might also ask VAP if they supplied the tune for your cars VIN number and they may be able to supply the stock tune for your car but I imagine they would have to charge you for a flasher.

Sorry for the duplicate info was typing reply while Lizzardo was replying. Looks like great minds think alike.

I've heard that, but not sure how it's relevant here ;^)

I also think we are talking apples and oranges. Does TSB calls for ECU or Transmission Computer update?

Also, did you buy a car from a private party or dealer? Did they disclose to you it was previously tuned?
