How to get pops and crackles
Just took delivery of a 16 R coupe. When I tested a 15, it seemed that the exhaust constantly popped and rumbled just by barely letting off the throttle or by downshifting. I could get some fairly tame crackles today, but only once or twice did I get a long run of crackles when I let off the gas. Granted, conditions were different today...much colder (30's)...the car was mine this time, so I probably ran the car harder than when the salesman was with me. The tester was a 15 model I think.
I had it in dynamic mode with the active exhaust on and the transmission in sports mode. Any advice on how to extract those long runs of pops and rumbles? Is there a specific gear, RPM, or whatever that does it best? Thanks and happy to be a first time Jag owner. |
First or second gear. Run it up to red line then let off. It should wake the neighbors.

During break-in, you won't get many. Once she is past 2,000 miles it will become more frequent. After 3,500 it seems to be as you might expect.
Might be the ECU keeping the new motor safe. Also, try a non-sport move drive for 30 min, switch to sport mode at the end. Turn it off and go get a coffee or something (~5 min). When you start up and run again, she may be good to go. Note - this is based in a V6S MT break-in. Orkney |

As Nati said, dynamic plus sport, run the Revs up above 3000 in a lowish gear and then lift off.

For the 6 speed, 2nd gear around 3500rpm and letting off the throttle always pops and crackles. |

The "R" i've worked on down here will pop/crack just by blipping the throttle from idle with it in park.
You can get a real machine-gun series of cracks by giving throttle in 1st, and then shifting up manually simultaneously as you lift off the throttle. With the exhaust open of course. It's really obnoxious! |
My '16 pops and crackles a ton between 3k - 4k rpm. In modes as described above. If yours isn't check w/ dealer maybe...it should!

I got a machine-gun effect yesterday, by accidentally hitting the rev limiter while in first gear. Oops.

but you are all missing the key to gets the pops and bangs rev it up lift off then feather touch the throttle and then lift this chucks a bucket load of fuel into the exhaust and unleashes the machine gun on demand |
Mine used to crackle and pop in dynamic / sport with the merest hint of lift at even low engine rpm / speed - there was no need to rev it to 3k+ rpm. As reported in the other thread, that behavior changed post the O2 software flash.
So - give this a try. Put it in standard / sport mode. You should get a lot of crackles and pops at low speed / low rpm. Even better - standard / sport and go into manual mode via the paddles - a LOT of pops and crackles, again no need to be at 3+k rpm or to be travelling at speed. This now sounds like dynamic / sport used to for me prior to the software flash. Give this a try and let us know the results - I am intrigued to see if your car exhibits this behavior. |

I just read on car&driver review of new Porsche 718. They had to speaker-fake the engine noises. How the mighty have fallen.

No. They did throw codes on the prototype part. We went with a larger 4" brick on the production parts, but I would expect them to be marginal. Probably will not throw codes most of the time, but some would experience transient or occasional codes. That's what it's like on the Astons.
We can always use tuning to switch off. |

And sorry - headers. My friend picked up his 2015 2WD R, wants to put a few kms on it to break in before we do anything too harsh like dyno it.
But I'm expecting it in the shop in the next 3-4 weeks. |
