Synthetic Oil Thermal Expansion?

Synthetic Oil Thermal Expansion?
So...I’ve noticed where some of our members will check their oil level before the car is started in the morning, and some check after the car has been driven, and then check after the 10 or 15 minutes it takes to let the hot oil settle back into the pan. Question:Will hot synthetic oil that has properly settled back into the pan, give you the same level as the cold engine oil? Or is there a significant amount of thermal expansion? Of course...the reading would all have to be checked on level ground etc.

Everything expands with heat except for water between 0 and 4 degrees C. (Which contracts due to compression of the crystalline ice structure). The lower the density, the higher the expansion. Oil is less dense than water and expands more with temperature. Engine oil at 240 degF will take up 11% more volume than at 70 degF. That's 3/4 of a quart on an F-Type e-dipstick.

Thank you. QUESTION: First oil change at dealer today. (One year, 9,000 miles) I specifically asked him to tell and remind the mechanic the AWD takes 6.5 Quarts and not 8. First thing I see on the invoice when I pick the car up is 9 quarts! WTF! He swears there is no way his guy overfilled it, let alone by that much, that it was most likely a typo, but the mechanic was gone for the day. The car had been parked (on level ground) waiting for me to pick it up for fifteen minutes or so...engine was warm but not at normal operating temp. I took him out to the car to check it with me and the oil level read exactly full and was not over. I would think that even at 8 quarts..let alone 9, the E-Dipstick would have read OVERFILLED?? Uhgg!
