Pass or Buy F-Type
Hi guys,
Yesterday I visited the following F-Type:
https://www.autoscout24.ch/de/d/jagu...ype-s-12795002
It looks like new — I didn’t notice any problems, but to be honest, I’m not very experienced when it comes to spotting issues. The seller was a private Jaguar owner who’s been driving Jaguars for 25 years. He said he’s never had any problems and that he’s now 68 years old and wants something smaller. He rarely drove the car and took very good care of it. I’m not sure if I can believe that or if it’s just a sales tactic.
The car is extremely cheap compared to the market, mainly because it’s an import. You can’t really find anything cheaper with the same mileage. Even the steering wheel looked brand new — I wouldn’t have guessed it had more than 14,000 km. The headlights were perfect too. Only one rim was slightly scratched, but I can live with that.
I’d like to hear your experiences and opinions — do you think it’s worth buying, and can I trust the seller?
Also, my second question: does this model have any common issues? Is it considered a good model year? Should I be worried about repair costs? Because honestly, that’s what concerns me the most
If I buy the car and end up paying 20,000 in repairs within one or two years, I’d rather not get it.

I'm not super-versed into F-Types but it looks like it has very few options. Base seats, no glass roof, no metallic paint, etc.
That, the fact it's an import, and the fact Swiss buyers seem to prefer buying these cars from dealer might explain the low price.
Also, the front brakes seem pretty toast, and I'd be surprised if a new set of disks & pads was anything under 2-3k at Jaguar (though you can DIY it for much cheaper).
Did you run a Carvertical on it?

Also:
-have a look at the service history by entering the VIN on : https://osh.jaguar.com/
-look at the coolant pipes below the engine cover, there should be a date stamp on them. It should have the updated one-piece design, but checking won't hurt.

I’ll definitely check those things — especially the service history and the coolant pipes.
Your points about the lack of options and the fact that it’s an import really help put things into perspective — it’s leaning more towards a no for me now. That’s exactly the kind of clarity I was looking for.
That thing with the VIN is fantastic, I am very grateful for that tipp!
Do you have any other inputs or things I should look out for?

Yeah I'd give it a pass. Pretty low spec for sure. Where was it imported from? At least it doesn't look like a US import which would be a real red flag. Doesn't say how old it is. EZ is stated to be Feb 2018 but I guess that's when it was registered after the import because in 2018 cars were facelifted ones and this one is obviously is a pre-facelift. The stone age satnav version gives away that it's a pretty early car.
For peace of mind the best thing is to get one with a warranty from e.g. a German JLR dealer.

Face-lift was for 2021 models, but the VIN checker will tell all.
If you have access to a site that tracks the cars history, that would help. Has the car been put on an on board diagnostic reader? That may tell you if there are issues. Are service records available? The seller says he is a long time Jaguar owner. Sellers like that tend to keep track of service records and receipts. Do you like the car.. or would you prefer a different color? No one can guarantee that a car won't have problems in the future, but if the current owner didn't beat the car, that's a positive sign.

Just to be clear, there were two F-Type facelifts. One for the MY18 cars and a second one for the MY21 cars. Under the skin the biggest facelift was arguably the MY18 one while the MY21 was mainly cosmetic with the completely different front end look and tweaked rear but no other real additions except the digital dash and slimmer matrix headlights.
Lots of good questions and advice here anyway, good luck with the search!

TBH, the import is from Germany, but I won’t take it. I’ll wait for a better model. We have one of the limited edition 400, but I don’t know how that one compares in terms of quality to the regular model. One idea would be to do the repairs in Germany. ^^Last edited by Jere; Oct 9, 2025 at 02:34 PM.

What bothers me is that I don’t have any information about its condition in Germany, plus there are very few specs available, and the color isn’t really my thing.
What do you mean by the diagnostic reader? Unfortunately, I didn’t have the option to use one — I’d have to ask the private seller.
I also saw a 400 Special Edition, which really caught my interest, but it has no warranty and hasn’t had a vehicle inspection for four years, so I’ll wait for now.
When looking for my XE, it was virtually impossible to find a car that had a full service history @Jaguar, with all the yearly services. I only found one and it was a smoker's car in a spec I didn't like (fuji white on black wheels, similar to the F-Type of this thread!).
My own experience with Jaguar servicing has been nothing short of abysmal (and expensive), so I sort of get people doing their maintenance outside of the official network. As long as there are invoices proving yearly (or almost yearly) servicing was done, I wouldn't worry.
P400 cars are quite rare. I don't like the spoiler & side skirts they come with, but to each their own.
This one's quite nice: https://www.autoscout24.ch/de/d/jagu...6-s-c-12572252

Which is something that happens all the time apparently at Jag dealers because they put the RWD amount into AWD cars…
