Pirelli tyres
 

My car P300, has now done almost 5000km. At a hunch I measured the tread of the tyres, Pirellis...

There is an enormous difference between the remaining tread, thoug I always keep them on 2.6bar, slightly above prescribed.

centre tread : front 6.5mm , rear 6mm [average ];
edges, flat part, 5cm from side : all fours, 2-2,5mm ...

So, in 2,5mm I need to replace the tyres with still 4mm in the central tread !!!

What is your experience, life expectancy with tyres, pirell's in particular ?

I never found out the life expectancy of the Pzeros. I swapped them out with MPSS ;-)

Michelin Pilot Sport 4S.

My experience: Factory alignment is garbage and it ate my first set of tires in about 5,000 kms. JLR refused to do anything about it. They did however pay for alignment.

Get Michelin Pilot Sport 4S, get them to do alignment for free. Enjoy much improved ride.

My F Type R had 9000 miles on it when I bought it, I believe it was on original Pirelli P Zero tyres.
I changed the tyres at approximately 22000 miles.

Your mileage will obviously depend on how you use your F Type

Thanx Paul ! This is roughly what my dealer says. Apparently the material around the shoulders is harder wearing then in the centre,
so eventually it wears evenly. And ofcourse your car is heavier and more powerfull, for me 35k km should be a possibility, no worries.. :icon_wheel:

The Michelins have different compound on different parts of the tire, so they may wear differently. No idea if the Pirellis have this.

Interestingly, I couldn't find anything other than 'multi-compound construction' on the Michelin site.

Just read the reviews on this site : many 'one star' reviews
But if you look at the locations, I think problems occor in warmer regions..

Personally, I tend to change tires when there's still quite a bit of tread left, as I find most tires get unacceptably noisy long before the tread is worn off.

You have Michelins of Pzero's ?

The P Zeros are particularly great tires for getting a little sideways out of a turn, teaching girlfriends how to do burnouts, and donuts....other than that, the PS4s are heads and shoulders above.

I've thoroughly enjoyed having the P Zeros to trash this summer but I am definitely looking forward to replacing them after the winter.

I have about 5k miles on my P Zeros and they are definitely nearing the end / becoming darty...granted I have abused the hell out of them for the last 5k miles.

Hmm.. ... given the abuse you give them, no wonder really... I did a round in the XJR575 LWB with Dale Lomas last week. On a bizzy day he burns a set of - normal street tires-
on the Nordschleife as a ring taxi EACH DAY ... Great fun we had, doing 230kmh on a wet circuit... :icon_pala:

These tires don't owe me a thing that's for sure -- but I never had high confidence in them, they never inspired confidence like the PSS / PS4s all my previous cars have worn.

That said, I'm damn glad the car came with them since its been nothing short of a riot beating on them every chance I get...almost makes me want to keep a spare set of p zeros around to thrash on when the mood strikes...almost.

My original set of Pirellis lasted to 14k miles. Downright frightening for the last 2k miles however. Got stuck having to get a second set, also barely lasted 10K before becoming bad. Have MP4S's now. Just amazingly great tires 2k into the run with them. Hope they hast to 20K.

Changed out P Zero at 16k for MPSS 4s. Rears were much more worn than I realized. Car feels better than new with Michelin.

Can't do it. Was once poor and the frugal side of me just can't allow myself to ditch P-Zeros with 75% tread left. Even though for <$1100 or so I could have a much better ride.
Did I say poor? I meant a homeless beach bum lol.

I have the same nature; thats why it gave me scare that at the edges there are only 2-2.5mm after 5000km.
But if I start to feel unsafe, I will swap them. I am not sure yet what brand of tyre though.
Sofar I am very enthousiastic about a brand that makes tires in my own country, using tyre manufacturing equipment from a company in my hometown [ VMI ].

Vredestein tires were under my Discovery 3 for eons. Now my 3rd set, averaging 35.000-40.000km's . The car currenly belted 320.000km's without blinking ;
original engine [ TdV6 ] and autobox. Regular maintenance is the name of the game here.

These were WINTRAC EXTREME type, which I also used in summer in Spain and Portugal too, although winter tires... Now I'm less offroading and switched
to QUATRACK 5 which I think of using under the F-Type as well. There is a dilemma as I want to hybernate the F-Type, so it would be better to stick to summer
tires like the VREDESTEIN ULTRAC VORTI . But there are relatively few reviews for that tire and opinions run 'far & wide' . I think I'll listen for once to my loyal
local tire salesman who sells zillions of tires each year..

Knowing the nature of my compatriots, they'll surely let him know if something is wrong..:icon_fryingpan:

I have to fight similar tendencies in myself due to similar reasons. Here is how I came to decision of getting rid of P-Zeros after just few drives.

I spent money on my car. It is very obvious that P-Zeros make it worse. By not replacing tires with MPSS or MP4S I am wasting $900/mo (approximate F-type depreciation) having subpar experience driving it. My choices are: a) trade it in for Corolla to cut down costs of ownership, because my ownership experience is not a priority b) maximize my enjoyment by spending/incurring small % of expected cost of ownership on much needed fix.

I concluded that cheapening on tires on a 100K car just doesn't make any sense to me.

Move from P-Zeros to MPSS was very noticeable in a RWD car. Move from MPSS to MP4S was less noticeable, mostly wet driving was improved.
