Radar Detector Mount
 

Has anyone hard wired in a radar detector and using a mirror mount? If so which mount are you using and how is the fitment?

Only caveat being don't bother if you have a 2017. Standard infrared reflective wind shield completely incapacitates radar detectors.

Hrmm. Of course I read this after I've gotten a $600 radar detector, the blendmount, and the mirror tap all set up. I haven't driven much but I have detected some radar. I wonder if my range is diminished or something though.

*edit: come to think of it...I think the only KA band I've detected is from behind after I had driven past it. I was alerted to it via escort live but didn't detect it myself until after I had driven by. damn.

I wonder if it would be worth just keeping it set up to get alerts from escort live on my phone, lol.

You will get signals coming from the rear and sides. Anything in front of you it won't detect until you're like 50 feet from the source, and sometimes not at all. The only solution is a new windshield or exterior sensors.

It would be a shame if your windshield got hit by a rock and the next one was a <2017 variant.

As for the mount, I love the blendmount in my van but in the F-type the viewing space is too compromised.

Went with a 3m/permanent mount right below the useless visor. Tucks up nicely, no wobbling either. Escort 360

I love my K40. Very slick installation and apparently it avoids the windshield problem.

Any suggestions for externally mounted systems?

The escort 360 ci is coming out soon as well. I might wait for reviews on it and then look at the external system but I'm thinking for the cost of some of these remote systems, I can pay for a lot of lawyer/tickets.

I have an extra Beltronics Magnum STI I mounted next to the rear view in the "cut out". I will be interested to see what kind of performance I get. I am hoping for better than 100% ineffective.

Oh, you will get something. Your windshield is not completely radio blocking. There is just a mesh which significantly reduce the RD performance. So along with the decreased performance you will also receive the false sense of security. So IMHO it would be better for you if you didn't get any response vs. decreased response - you would at least stop going over PSL.

I have driven with radar detectors for a while and in California they are not full proof because there is a quite a bit of laser. Unless you have radar jammers, you have to be careful. Just last weekend, I got hit with LIDAR in another car. I wasn't speeding (there was traffic) and he was reported on Waze but he was hidden pretty good and with jammers you would have been toast.


What I am curious about is just how bad the range is going to be. For example, on one mountain road I was able to get 1+ mile detections with the Magnum (not in the Jag). While that is great, the CHP was running C/O and he was hiding over a hill so I didn't need that range. If the detector would alert before the crest of the hill, I would have been fine.


We will see and I will report back. In the meantime, I will be careful for both radar and laser.

You meant Laser Jammers, not radar jammers, right? And no system is full proof.

In your situation you could be OK with CO, but with IO you rely on getting the scatters from the hit on a car in front of you. With this decreased performance you might simply not get it. Hence the false sense of security...

Yeah I meant laser jammers. In California, I/O is not a huge problem. In fact, most of the I/O that I encountered was rolling not stationary and sometimes even coming from the rear.


Where I live laser is a much bigger issue. As I said without jammers or a rabbit you are kind of toast so for me there is no sense of security, even with a radar detector. I generally believe in a layered defense that includes eye saves, memorizing popular speed traps, reading terrain, rabbits, radar detectors and Waze. Still the only way not to get a ticket for sure is not to speed.
