What's a reasonal % under MSRP to expect when buying a F-Type?

What's a reasonable % off MSRP to expect when buying an F-Type? What should be considered a "killer deal?

jaguny 03-15-2019 06:21 AM

For a new car; outgoing model year it was around 20% off when I bought mine in Spring of 2016. Some I think may have hit 25, but I don't think that was common. These were cars that were on the dealer floor, not ordered. Many of them had been purchased by the dealer and "punched" (put into service). Mine had less than 80 miles and was essentially new. Mine had 4 months less warranty on it due to the dealer purchase, but they also offered to CPO for $1100. In hindsight I should have purchased the CPO, as the years click by fast. SVR's at one time could be had for 25% or better for a very short time as JLR was trying to clean out inventory in 2017. I don't know what the current market conditions are. This is also for R models, as I didn't shop V6 and there were not 4 banger at the time. Alaways ask if the car has been purchased by the dealer (ask for the "in service date").
There were also not a lot of used cars on the market at the time, so I don't know how this has impacted buying new or punched cars if at all.
What model are you considering?

Base

Well I was thinking of the 4 banger. I love the way it drives! My hesitation is that it is rwd and I live in P.A. where we get a fair amount of winter weather. Would that be crazy? We have another car to use on snow days but I am trying to keep the mileage down on that vehicle and use the Jag as my daily driver. I just can't justify the $20k difference to get awd!

3-5% discount on any new special order JLR vehicle seems to be the most to hope for. Discount gets steeper as the model year turns over.

If you live in PA just buy a dedicated set of snow tires & wheels. Unless you need to drive in unplowed conditions (steep driveway) that should suffice.

I've been driving our P Zero-equipped V6 and I can REALLY tell the difference in traction when the temps are low. (There is a snowflake icon on the dash when you need to be careful.) Yesterday we had relatively warm weather and BOY I had forgotten how good the grip could be! That said, with reasonable prudence we didn't experience any unsafe cold weather grip issues.

That was my experience as well... I tried to get a better deal than 4.5% off MSRP from 4 dealerships on a new order, but did not succeed.

JLR stopped big discounts on F-types, with exception of 4-banger trim in US, but who wants to drive that?

Suaro 03-16-2019 06:39 PM

This is what Donald Rumsfeld classified as a known unknown. The financial relationship between JLRUSA and a dealer has so many ins and out there is no way you can possibly know the complete dealer economics. So you say what is a good enough deal. Ok 10% off will get you to invoice. And a past model year should be another 5% but where do you go from there. I wish I knew. There are a lot of people who want to help, Costco, AAA, USAA, my pet spaniel, but after some pretty diligent searching I have been unable to find any objective data on which program does well, let alone the best.

Then you have the consideration that some markets are more competitive than others. Marin Cnty CA is a well to do area, where folks send their executive assistants to the dealership to lease the car. They can't afford to spend the time on something that is only worth a couple of thousand dollars. Then you get into the central valley and there is at least one JLR dealer who makes a nice living selling cars to people from SF who still care about a buck.

Then there is the culture of the dealership. Some guys think I call the number and you pay it.

And remember for $500-$1,000 you can ship a car from the back side of the moon. I hope we get a good discussion. I could use some new data.

What's eligible? New only, or used too?

17.5 % off on a brand new vehicle is quite respectable. Congrats.

In Sweden when you spec your own car you will usually get an 8% discount.

Concur that there are a lot of unknowns. I have no idea what hidden money existed when I bought my 2016 in late October 2017 (the 2018 models were out and on the lots). Stickering at ~$92K, I got it for $60K (no money down and no trade) AND they delivered (single vehicle trailer) it from Louisiana to my lake house north of Houston (about 250 miles). It had never been titled and had about 300 miles on the clock at the time of the sale. I did the financing through them, which meant it was Jaguar Financial/Chase Bank.

Definitely an outlier as far as discounts go, but it was basically one third off of the MSRP...at the beginning of the process, they were showing it on their website at something like $79K and had discussed $70K on the phone before I drove out there to look it over.

No one has discussed JLR's Private Offer program via JCNA lately, don't know if it's still available. Used to be that if you were a member of JCNA for 6 months prior to buying a car, you could get up to an additional $5K off, after all other negotiations.

I will say that I found that you could only use one promotion on your purchase. i.e. if your company has a Perks program as well, you couldn't use both and had to pick one of the two (or more) discounts you qualified for...
