Fluids for Engine and Tranny Swap
 

My 2013 XF 3.0 awd is currently in the shop getting the engine and transmission swapped for another 3.0 V6 s/c after the original Powertrain failed. The engine I’m swapping in is out of a 2014 XJ with 47000km/29000 miles on it. I’m looking at filling up the oils in the ZF8HP transmission that was drained before being sent out to me. I was wondering if just filling up the oil level would be sufficient or do I need to do a complete oil change by draining the transmission and changing the pan? I know ZF recommends doing the change at around 80,000 but considering the transmission has been driven way less than that I’m not sure if it’s necessary. Any pro tips? Will just filling it up with fluid be good enough? Also, is the JLR ATF oil a must or can I swap it out for a cheaper alternative? If so, any recommendations?

It would be sufficient to fill but you have a good opportunity now to replace the transmission fluid and pan. A used engine/transmission is always something of a gamble - this reduces the risk and gives you a baseline for future maintenance. It has almost certainly already been an expensive issue for you and the relatively small additional cost should put transmission worries out of the way for a long time. Opinions on fluids vary across the membership with both cost and locally available alternatives coming into consideration. Let the debate commence. :icon_lol:

Sorry for the off topic reply but what happened that you needed to replace BOTH the engine and transmission on such a late model car?

Please read up on the filling procedure. No you can't just do that. The ZF is an expensive tranny don't destroy it by running the fluid low!
It complicated but necessary to check the fluid level as the factory recommends.

i had the same exact problem 12k later another used crappy engine was installed ... it happens to way too many of these engines... bought Jags since 2007... this is my last one !!!!!

hmmm, not my experience.
Following the replacement of an engine or transmission or both,
1. All New fluids.
2. Test idle. Test drive. look for leaks, etc. Let cool.
3. Test drive. Change All fluids.
4. Good to go.
Every dealer I have used for this situation has used this procedure.

I'm interested in the reasoning too.

Just follow the manufacturer's procedure so you don't over- or under-fill. Each of those can wreck the trans. Only an idiot would not just do it right!!
