Genrad GDS 500E / GDS 510 scan tool info

Default Genrad GDS 500E / GDS 510 scan tool info

I picked up a GDS 510 scanner recently, brand new, never used.

It did not come with an instruction manual, and there seems to be very little info out there on these tools.
All I know is that when they first came out in 1997 they were $1300 USD
At some stage the original GDS 500E was replaced by the GDS 510

This is the "replaceable PROM cartridge" that they talk about in the bulletin. The connector on the bottom does not match up with the cables that came in the box, I can only assume that connector was used by Genrad for updating the PROM itself. Or there might have been another cable that the user could have used for updating, maybe, I don't know.

This cable allows you to power the unit from the power supply, via the DLC cable. No idea what the serial connector on the cable is for. A printer maybe?

This cable has me baffled, the plug connects to the power supply, and the other side is the same as the power cable for the GDS3500 / WDS, and the VMM. It's an add-on that let's you charge your WDS?

So I guess my questions are;

1. does anyone have a user manual for this thing?
2. does anyone know about updating the PROM to the latest version?

Maybe I already have the latest version, I've got no idea... there are no dates on the unit that I could find.

I have the 500e which doesn’t seem to have any of the accessories you have!

I have the manual, but it’s rather disappointing. It’s only a few pages long.

I only use the XJ6 setting for my car to read the codes a regular OBD2 device can’t read, like ABS. I was hoping it could do things like reset base idle. It cannot. It doesn’t really do anything special, other than pull ABS, Transmission codes.

I think I’m missing an accessory, because it doesn’t seem to work with the engine running. The car has to be on for it to work, but if I turn the engine over, it freaks out.

So the GDS500E was able to read the transmission codes in your XJS?

It would appear so. I don’t have any transmission codes to try it on, but it does confirm to make a connection to read it. I can screen shot that later today.

It definitely reads the ABS codes (I had one of those), so I suspect it could pull any of the Jag specific codes.

Interesting!

Can you force a fault (say, unplug the TPS or the Sport Mode switch) and see if the fault codes get reported with the GDS500E?

I'm pretty sure it would pull it. If it got the ABS code, and it tells me that it successfully connected to the transmission, I think it'll work.

It definitely says that is unable to make a connection with the Body Module (because the XJS doesn't have that)

Cambo,

Any idea whether your Genrad device allows you to reset the TPS in an XJ6?

I read on an old post somewhere other than here that the Genrad 510 should do that, my 500e does not. Can you flip through the menus and see if it will?

I connected it up to an XJR6, under the Jagcom menu was only transmission and ABS, talking to the engine ECU was only possible through the OBD2 menu, nothing really in there apart from reading/clearing codes and freeze frame, no service or calibration functions.

I have figured out that this thing does not like to be plugged in when you turn the engine over. Plug it in AFTER the engine has fired up if you want to use it with the engine running.

Bit of a bump on this subject...

I came across another GDS-510 for sale (didn't buy it, not yet anyhow) but it's very interesting to see what was missing from my kit!






- Instruction manuals
- Cable with RS-232 connector (to connect to a PC?) actually it looks like a combined power and serial cable, so you talk to the GDS510 via the DLC cable???
- CD with "TERADYNE GDS510 Applications" on it

When you look at the picture of the instructions, you can see a Current Clamp in the picture, which connects to the socket on the bottom of the GDS510.
Also looks like there is another cable or device which plugs in that socket as well. No idea what that does... I guess they got a little ahead of themselves planning for features and applications that never materialised?

$700 Canadian Dinars for this unit, plus shipping out of Ontario, it's a bit too much for me, but if someone wants it i'd chip in a bit to get a copy of the CD and the manuals... and to reverse engineer that RS-232 cable...
