tech advice on 4.2 supercharged v8 (AJ34S) engine

Hi Guys,

Just after some information on the 4.2l v8 supercharged jag engine (the AJ34S). Does this engine have variable valve timing, and if so is it fully variable or is it switched?

And also, does it have throttle by wire setup.

Thanks,

Rob

Yes drive by wire. Later on it got extra stuff but out of curiosity why do you care (was added mainly to reduce emissions). Tech guides with gory details are on the site if you really want to read esoterics...

stiggy1990 11-05-2013 09:29 AM

ok thanks.

Because we would be using this engine for a race car and would therefore need an aftermarket ECU to run it, and they want to know whether it is fully variable or switched valve timing, and they would also like to know where it adjusts to and where it adjusts from..

Like I said previously we have never had any experience of jaguar engines before, could you tell me where the tech guides are situated on the site??

Thanks

It'll depend which exact 4.2 SC engine you buy. When you look at the engine there are 2 flat spots (or 2 sets of wires) just in front of covers over the spark plugs.

You were almost looking at the stickies for the files when you chose Post New Thread in this forum :)

I was under the impression that the SC engine does not use VVT.

@jagV8.. Well we are looking to get the aj34s model, found in the s-type r (2003-2008) the xkr (2003-2010) or xjr (2004-2009). And so what do these flat spots/ wires represent?? Sorry for being dull!

And @rhankey, I have read on other sites that they don't have VVT as well, but thought I'd come on here because there are a lot more people who know a lot more than me :)

It wasn't the same engine 2003-8. It was NEARLY the same but they changed the PCM and various mechanical/electrical/etc changes. Choose the variant you fancy... probably up to about 2005/6.

ooh right okay! thanks for that, it isn't quite as straightforward as i thought then! did they definitely all have VVT though?

JagV8 11-06-2013 02:22 PM

No. They changed.

Laters do, the early dont have vvt's. Dont ask me when they changed

Am not sure either, earliest supercharged engine with VVT I have seen had an engine build of 2007, soit could be from MY2008

JagV8 11-07-2013 03:24 AM

Some were earlier than that, I think on STR from 2006MY (UK).
Easiest is to look at actual engine as it's obvious then!

thanks for all the replies guys, much appreciated. Haven't actually bought an engine yet, which is why I was trying to establish what cars had what engine and whether it had VVT or not so we can focus on looking for that type of car. People have said we could pick up a new engine for around 2-2.5k but I'm not sure which version of engine that is and whether it has VVT or not. Will have to keep looking I guess. Does anyone have an email address/ contact number for the bridgend motor plant that actually make the engine? Whether anyone there would be able to shed light on the issue?

Cheers again,

rob

The s/c 4.2L engines from these VIN's onwards had VVT

S-Type R from VIN N52048
X350 XJR & SuperV8 from VIN G49701
All 4.2L X150 XKR
All 4.2L X250 XF SV8 & XFR

That's great. Thanks very much for that!

the easiest way is to look at wiring diag for engine management for yr and model for VVT function :) JTIS Topix, Alldata etc..
