VIN decoding

1 Attachment(s)
We regularly receive requests for help with VIN identification through the various models across the board.

So I thought that I would put a thread together showing the various tools that can be used to decode VIN numbers etc.

This is not exhaustive, and is also not in any sort of age order at this time.

Please feel free to add your favourite VIN or identification tools.

Here are just a few for starters.

Not included JTIS or EPC (they can be downloaded elsewhere on the forum).

Attachment 174155

This link to part one of the X300/X308 parts file from the X300 FAQ (3 parts to the download). Each download contains the preamble with VIN and Engine/Transmission identification and resembles the above picture.

This link to the Auto Calculator Site (enter your VIN and decode).

Here the Xclusively Jaguar site (scroll down the page for links to various models) Shown as a chart.

Jaguar planet. (83 to 97 explanations)

If this thread becomes sufficiently populated, I will clean it up and add it to the FAQs.

Thanks,

Good work!

The Xclusively Jaguar page is only one I've ever seen that acknowledges the secondary VIN used on USA/Canadian cars.

Cheers

I emailed them this morning and they are fixing the link to their X308 guide shortly.

Good idea, Richard! Here's my contribution.

Some of this may already be here on the forum somewhere, if so, just trash it.

Thanks very much Steve, exaclty what I am looking for. I know that a fair few are on the forum but the problem is they are scattered around the place, buried in threads, archives etc.

My aim is to regroup them into one new thread and FAQ them for easy referal.

Thank you for taking the time to extract these files.

Anyone have the XF's?

Or the classic model chassis numbering, XKE, 420 etc.

SUPER MOD,

You are a Gem. I have been endeavouring to extract this info out of Jaguar UK: at first they were very helpful, giving me very 'full bodied' info about the X & S types. But they suddenly 'clammed' up, and my paranoia tells me that following a conversation I had with a National Sales Manager of a National Distributor, the Customer Service people were told 'to send me to Coventry'.

I owe you a beer!

Cheers,

Languid

Thanks Languid, we all do what we can. Email me the beer. LOL

But Steve, I/we can't answer technical questions in the way that you guys can and do.

Works both ways I guess.

(err, Steve, don't suppose you can lay your hands on the S1, S11, S111 6 pot sheet, recently had a question about 5th digit, V/Y differences and ID).

Nailed it Steve, many thanks again.

I'll do a spot of editing and add them into the original listing.

I am new to the forum and I'm trying to find some information on a 78 XJS (that is now a convertible) I recently inherited from my father in law. It no longer has the original engine as he had replaced it with a 327 chevy S/B but does have what appears to be a proper XJS2WXXXXXBW VIN. You guys are the only ones who seem to have information on these old VIN numbers. I am having the body and interior done in the next few months and was hoping to find out a little about what this car was originally. Any help is greatly appreciated

VIN Jag XK8 Conv

Hi

I am new of the forum and just bought a Jag XK8 convertible that should be a '98 production.
I have used your precious information (thanks!!!) for trying to understand more about my car but there is something I cannot understand.

The VIN of my car is

SAJJGAFD4AR023662.

Everything ok up to digit nr 10:
SAJJ=Jag
G=X100
A=BaseSpec
F=2door Conv
D=4.0Litre
4=Auto LHS

But then an "A" appears as 10th digit that I cannot match with V=1997 model year, W=1998 model year, X=1999 model year.

Than remaining digits are again ok:
R=95RON, emission C, S/C
023662 = serial number = production 1998.

Can anybody help me with this "strange" 10th digit?

Thanks and regards to all,

Luca

Not sure if this will help, and I haven't examined all the resources mentioned in this thread, but.....

Make sure the VIN decoder you're using is applicable to your car. North American (or at least USA) cars are assigned a VIN that complies with the unique North American/USA legal requirements.

So, if you have an ROW (rest of world) car but are using a North American VIN decoder it results won't make sense. And vice-versa, of course.

Not sure when, if ever, all countries and car builders got together to have a truly universal VIN system. If they have, it's a fairly recent development.

Jaguar XJR X308 vin decoding

Hi
This is my first post here and I need some information.
A few days ago I decide to change my car (BMW 735I made in 1990 with a lost of option like LSD, Hill descent control, ASC+T and more)
My choice was a Jaguar XJR (i want an upgrade).
I would like to know much more about this car before to buy it, i have the VIN SAJAA15J1YMS15008 but i did not find a program to fully decode the VIN.
Most of the decoding was made by reading some pdf files but the essential is not yet discovered like standard equipping and optional futures.
I type this post because for some other cars i find some decoding programs but not for Jaguar, The site i found do not recognize my VIN.
Some one can help me?
Best regards
Gabriel

Welcome to the forum Gabriel,

The VIN numbers of Jaguars manufactured for either ROW (Rest of World) or Japan market specifications are often difficult to decode. This is as close as I can get for the VIN you have shown which is a 'Rest of World' specification:

SAJ = World Manufacturer Identifier (Jaguar)
A = Market (ROW - Rest of World)
A = Transmission (Automatic)
15 = Model Range (XJR)
J = Emission Control System (Emission A)
1 = Check Digit
M = Model Range / Assembly Plant (4.0 litre Supercharged / Browns Lane)
S = Model
15008 = Sequential Serial Number

Jaguar VIN will not tell you anything about optional equipment fitted to the vehicle although a Jaguar Dealer can supply this from the original factory build specification.
