So what's your full charge range?
When I first received my I-Pace a full charge indicated I had a range of 260 miles. After a month of daily driving to and from work (34mi round trip) a I'm down to 195 miles for a full charge. This is very disconcerting. The JLR tech told me the battery gets maximum performance when you setup vehicle preconditioning. I did that 2 weeks ago but still continue to see the range drop for a full charge. I'm in NJ and the temps have been in the mid to low 30's Fahrenheit. Does this kind of temperature affect the battery this much?

Yes the batteries really don't like the cold and heating them takes an impressive amount of power. Here is Oregon it has been in the 30's and 40's, I haven't been doing preconditioning (which heats the batteries on charger power) and have been showing 185 miles range and I've just been doing around town driving (though I have a bit of a lead foot).

Here in the Netherlands, people are starting to return their Ipace to the dealer, because the range is so very disappointing to them.
There was one man on tv who couldn't even reach his work place from his home without recharging (a 160 mile drive, mostly highway).... |
That's strange, weather there is running about the same as it is where I'm living. His drive must be really ugly to drop down to under 160 miles range.
|
That's really sad to hear. My brother in law just got his and so far he hasn't had any complaints, but he's in Southern CA where the weather isn't too cold. He is moving up to Sacramento area later this year though and it'd be interesting to see in the winter how his holds up for his commutes.
|
I'd be surprised if he saw much difference in Sacramento, its pretty mild there.
|
It should be fine, he does love it so far. He did mention to me he wanted to drive it up the steep mountains sometime. My wife's family members can never stay indoors too long- always gotta be out and about! Haha

I live in the Sacramento area. When the weather dipped below 40, I would see a decrease in range of about 20%. This is a good chunk of the winter in the morning commute. The cold has a huge impact on the range. |
Clearly showcases that I spent summers near Sacramento but not winters. Thanks for the update!

This morning at 2 degrees Fahrenheit a full charge indicates 125 miles. Ouch!
|
Wait until you hit some big hills. Then you'll really see a hit to the ol' range. The first time I went from Sacramento to Auburn was an eye opener. I was using about 3 miles of range for every mile travelled when I hit the big hill. I got some of it back on the way home, but not at the same level.
|
I saw that as well but I got a surprising amount of range back coming back down the hill. If you don't drive that fast and just use the accelorator (not the brake) regenerative braking works pretty well. (Part of the reason I likely saw such a big benefit was becasue it was also a lot warmer lower).

By the way, the European I-Pace forum is having a cow over the I-Pace range, Jaguar is doing themselves no favors there: https://www.ipaceforums.co.uk/viewtopic.php?f=12&t=928
They are significantly ahead of us here in the US with deliveries making this a good forum to check until we have more cars and activity. For instance, there is an interesting post suggesting cars delivered after mid-March will have an updated charger and that existing cars should, with software updates, handle 150KW chargers. https://www.ipaceforums.co.uk/viewtopic.php?f=12&t=344 Here is another on how the I-Pace headlight washers work (who knew): https://www.ipaceforums.co.uk/viewtopic.php?f=8&t=965 (I'm reading through it to improve my own knowledge so I can better answer questions here). And, back on topic, here is a thread talking about rapid chargers (which I haven't been able to try myself yet): https://www.ipaceforums.co.uk/viewtopic.php?f=8&t=929 (Looks to be working pretty well) |
Tangent: Check with your local city about free parking permits. In Sacramento, I got a free card for the garages in old Sac so I could use the chargers there.

From the link Rob posted:
The official range of I-PACE is 292 miles using the standardised WLTP test and this result is the figure we are legally required to quote. The WLTP test was designed to give a more real-world range than the outgoing NEDC test but it still can't reflect all the different factors that affect range, such as: the weather, temperature, driving style. As such, the actual range people obtain will depend a great deal on those factors. So why does JLR post videos of the I-Pace on snow/ice? Didn't JLR notice that the range was significantly less in colder conditions? My post above has a range of 125 miles at 2 degrees Fahrenheit. When I drove my I-Pace at these temperatures, the range increased as I drove (very little regenerative braking). This is clearly a mis-calibration of the battery for temperatures near zero. I hope a future software update will fix this issue. |
Are you folks Preconditioning your car?? Battery temperature is critical in order to achieve maximum range. As the car drives and the battery warms up you will get more range indicated than with a cold battery.
From the I-Pace manual... vehicle preconditioning provides cabin comfort before entering the vehicle and prepares it for the next departure time. It also preconditions the high voltage battery to its optimum operating temperature when the vehicle is connected to an external charging station. If the vehicle is left plugged in, battery temperature is maintained within the operating range using energy from the electricity supply. Where a departure time is also set, battery temperature is managed to give optimal performance at the specified departure time. |
I've set mine up to automatically precondition mid-day and end of day (I work from home) as I'm likely to use it to go out to lunch or dinner. Haven't taken it on a long drive since picking it up in Portland (about 160 miles away).
