Default Im ignorant about engines, BUT...

I would love to get a deeper growl and more torque out of my 1985 Jaguar XJ6 series III 4.2L inline 6. It has 108,768 miles. Idles a bit rough, but runs well.

I would like to do the work myself, if possible! But I dont know anything about engines. I have no issues paying to have the work done, if thats the proper thing to do.

Thoughts? Advise? Suggestions?

Rough idle is an illusive problem in that the cause is not readily apparent. It can be a number of things. Having written that, my first search would be for a small vacuum leak. Check out the thread here on leak detection. Any car the age of your car will begin to suffer leaks to rubber hoses.

San Diego has many very competent independent foreign auto mechanics, who can fix things the old fashioned way, which is finding out the cause and then replacing parts. The "new way" is often replacing parts first, and hoping that the cause has been cured.

Grab a can of break cleaner and spray in the are of vacuum lines and see if the engine tone changes. If it does, you have an air leak there
