Economist article on Tata and JLR (not sure what section would be best??)
This isn't off topic, so I put it here. It's in the F-Type forum, but there's no general discussion forum for JLR related news and biz, right?
https://www.economist.com/business/2...its-own-making paywall so pardon me if I copy/paste: Tata to the rescue:But the maker of upmarket SUVs looks fixable |
I wrote a lengthy reply to this but have deleted it.
I'm far from impressed by the Tata stewardship of JLR. It is only slightly less catastrophic than their destruction of our steel industry. To suggest Tata has performed a turnaround from JLR near bankruptcy is grossly offensive to Ford who saved Jaguar by pouring in millions, bringing manufacturing out of the dark ages and retaining the brand identity. Tata has done no more than reap the benefit of this prior investment. Graham |
This is an interesting take. I am *not* disagreeing with you, and I've legitimately no ambivalence.
My thought is that investing money in what becomes a wasted investment isn't a winning strategy, and definitely is what would be considered a failure. One of the below linked articles mentions something like "could you imagine where Ford would be if they just had that money in the bank?". That Tata came in at the proper time to re-energize the brand and inherit any of Ford's work, that's literally just called "business". Again... not disagreeing. It's not like I've a horse in this race re: Ford or Tata. I'm just some California boy who likes his lovely vehicle. LOL If there's even a chance your longer response still exists, or you're feeling randy enough to espouse more of your thoughts, I would love to be educated. I am not a Tata fan to any extent. All I know is they got Jag to create the F-Type, instead of that bubbly version Ford had proffered, and I like it. =) I remember the consensus was that the investment Ford made was a far cry from anything other than a waste of money and abject failure... and that's not my opinion, but just what I remember reading: BBC - Peston's Picks: Ford's failed marriage https://www.forbes.com/2006/08/10/fo...l#1d6fa78d78d6 https://www.mycustomer.com/marketing...-failed-jaguar https://adage.com/article/news/land-...r-ford/117378/ https://carbuzz.com/news/biggest-aut...-jaguar-x-type https://www.thetruthaboutcars.com/20...e-ford-failed/ So, as someone who is just about 5 years into learning more about and understanding the history of automobiles, I am wildly open to hearing more about your thoughts and opinions!! =) Cheers you! |
