1946 Mark 4 Jag

Hello everyone
My name is Jim & this post is essentially for my brother who owns one of these old Jaguars.
He thinks that his transmission needs work as the shifting is problematic (synchronizers, etc)
Do any of you fellows know what transmissions might interchange? As in 1946 thru 1951?
Or others?
Thanks so much
Jim

These cars were essentially the pre-war car with a few minor trim changes. As far as I know the Mark 5 had the same engine and gearbox even though it was on the new chassis for the XK120 and Mark VII. I'll have a look in my copy of Paul Skilleter's encyclopedic book on the Jaguar saloons, but I think it is the Moss gearbox that carried on in use until the all-synchro box came out in the early 60s. You could probably fit the all-synchro box if you can find one, but might have to change the prop-shaft or shorten/lengthen it. Jaguar used only one manual gearbox for all the cars, first the Moss box, then the all-synchro right up to the 70s and even beyond..

Thanks so much, Fraser. I really appreciate the information
Cheers.

I found this after a brief search on the internet.

Rob Reilly's Moss Gearbox Identification

Before the Mark V all the Jaguar engines and gearboxes came from the Standard Motor Company based in Coventry. Shortly after WW2 the tooling for the Jaguar engines and gearboxes was offered to Jaguar as Standard were keen to rid themselves of the contract and concentrate on the Standard Vanguard, (a very successful car). It seems that the gearboxes were made for Standard by Moss.
