MKIX Flex Coupler – Steering Rack Hose Clamp Hack
 

In case anyone else runs into this job. I was recently installing my steering rack after sending it off to Vintage Jag Works (so far extremely happy with their work but I just install it). I was trying to reinstall the flex coupler which attaches the steering shaft to the steering rack and the holes on the flex disc were slightly off (the flex disc spacing was a hair too large). I tried a new flex disc that we had as a spare and had the same issue.

To solve the problem, we took a large hose clamp and compressed the flex disc slightly to allow us to get the bolts through and tighten them. Once everything was bolted down we took the hose clamp off.

Another good tip, keep a large hose clamp in your trunk in case your flex disc fails. In a bind you can drive the car back home by using it. This is a tip we received from our previous tech who was one of the original techs for our car and working on jags since ’61.
