240 steering column bush
Hi all
I am after the bushes no.25 and no.26 appearing in the below drawing But I cannot find them on the parts book to see their code. (maybe i am doing something wrong) Could you please help me in case you know the parts' numbers? Cheers Nassos https://cimg0.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.jag...f9d1320a76.jpg |
those are nowadays sold as Vinyl Bushes for the upper and lower steering column.
check at SNG Barrat. They used to be some kind of "yute" or "horsehair". I replaced the ones in my 3.8 'S', I needed to disconnect and remove the inner steering column complete with steering wheel to replace them, wasn't very difficult. https://cimg4.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.jag...2e83ef3be9.jpg |

parts as Glyn has said, the older style bushes are no longer available as far as I know, you can change the lower one with the column in place but not the top one.
|
I do not know if any of you had this issue but I replaced them and I believe due to the different materials they seem to squeak after a while and it has been a little of a pain to stop the squeak? Also the way they designed the horn contact that is on the column built with copper to me is a poor design as I am going to replace my complete shaft setup with a better quality used one as that part is not available. That has caused the horn not to always work at certain spots due to wear...

did you grease the inner column and the bushings?
yes they do squeak. Have you noticed they only squeak at a certain place? the solution is to smooth polish the inner bushing and the steel column at the point they contact each other. are you using the original steering column? |

The horn is activated by a section of the column that has a low spot so I just got another used column since those parts are not available new and will replace it soon. If this one has that horn contact on the column wear out I will have to see if there is another way to activate the horn? |
Conventional Lithium etc grease is no good for plastics & plastics on steel.

USE: https://www.lubricantspecialty.com/p...stislip-grease I will give that a shot when I install the new steering column as it is a royal pain the try to get rid of the squeak. |
Plastics require a different lubrication regime. Pulling the column is a pain.
The Molykote material should work & work well. If it doesn't the only option is to change the bushing material to something in the Nylon range or plastics with Teflon or MOS2 in the blend. |

I may be wrong but in looking at the sttached Martin Robey catalog, page 22, it shows parts 1, 1A, 2, and 2A as the bushes for the upper and lower steering column. 1A and 2A are FELT.
I am wondering if the squeak is due to the omission of the FELT sleeve. I call it "horsehair" because it looked like some kind of "yute" fibrous material when I removed it from my steering column, then replaced it with the vinyl bushes, which I have not been satisfied with due to the squeak. |
My understanding is that the "felt" bushes are no longer available & superseded by the plastic bushes.
|
so Robey does not supply these felt bushes at all? My my. I had my hopes set on a set. The plastic bushes eliminate the play in the column, but the squeak is annoying. It does not happen all the time, it depends on the weather.

I narrowed the felts and put them in with the plastics. All from SNG. Lubed the felts with a moly grease & dielectric on the plastic. Tight combination.
|
That sounds like a good idea if you can get the felts. When I did my column SNG could not supply ~ only plastic which is thusfar quiet but properly lubricated. Talking as an oil man the problem with plastics is they are not wettable/or reluctantly wettable with normal petroleum products. A saturated felt ring would supply a constant feed of lubricant to the plastic bush. Preferably the right lubricant. Could give you the best of both worlds.
Primaz will be a good test because he puts on mileage. Interestingly we have also found greases dosed with Potassium Borate to work well on squeaking plastics. e.g. anti-roll bar/sway bar poly bushes. |
I have just run the Felt Part numbers at both Robeys & Barratts. They will both provide you with a flat sheet of felt in the 2 correct thicknesses for you to cut & construct your own felt bushes. That is a better situation than when I built my column & was told superseded. The parts situation is endlessly fluid. That said the plastic bushes should work well if you can keep them properly lubricated.

wow, I wonder what kind of felt that is, because I can get felt sheets at crafts stores locally, unless the felt they provide is some kind of yute?
the kind of felt I can get is the stuff you put at the bottom of table lamps and figurines made of baked clay, so the bottom base does not scratch the table. it is about 1/8" thick until compressed by the weight of the object. |
