Air filter question

Air filter question
I wonder if anyone can help me. I have a MK11 (1967) 340. I'm not much of a mechanic but try and attempt some of the basics. As my engine was misfiring a little recently I decided to change the plugs. As you will know, this means removing the air filter. Usually this isn't an issue but I noticed, having disassembled this that I had a thin circular rubber seal left over. I can see the relevance of this but cannot work out exactly from where within the assembly it came. Does it come off the filter itself or 1) the outer circumference of the 'lid' section of the unit 2) does it circle the hole which forms the inner circumference of the bottom section upon which the filter itself fits. Apologies for the sophomoric nature of this post but if you can help it would be much appreciated

Jeff nice pics and you are correct. One unsolicited comment is your air filter in the pic is very small. The correct filter almost fills up the can and has a very soft (almost gummy) edge that makes a positive seal. Filters (like the one pictured) have a harder edge and a proper seal is tough to obtain. That plus a reduced area means the filter is quickly dirty and reduced air flow will result. Will take a pic soon.

I wonder if that is the one the OP is talking about ?

Thank you
Many thanks to all of you for responding to my original question. Without wishing to labour the subject I'm attaching a photo of the component described in my original post. Unstretched this is about the circumference of the hole in the bottom part of the filter housing. Still not sure where this baby goes (maybe I should just give up at this point). I do wonder if it should be stretched so that it fits the outer circumference of the top part of the housing thus forming a kind of seal with the bottom section
Any further thoughts, I love to hear them.
Thanks,
Adrian
