Bonnet centre strip
Hi All,
Just a quick one, how to remove the central chrome strip on the bonnet without damage. Side strips look like the tabs are bent back and it lifts off ( not that they are coming off ) but the central strip look like long rivets going through the bonnet. Looks like it either slides off or pops off with a bit of pressure but have tried neither. Thanks |
what model car is it?

not sure in the MK-2, but it may be a rivet.

To my knowledge they have used everything from T Bolts with nuts to clips with 2 fold over legs over time and that's if they are original.

If they look like rivets, they probably are, as Glyn said there are many kinds, but the riveted type only look like what they are. There is usually a T bolt or similar usually immediately behind the Leaper, they usually used a bolt type fixing at the leading edges, presumably to stop the wind getting behind the strips and pulling them off.
If you have any of these remove the nut first and then gently wiggle and prize off the chrome strip, when I say wiggle, if you were stoop at the front of the car, slightly twisting the chrome strip clockwise and anticlockwise along it's length helps pop the sides off the riveted heads, if you just try to lift the strip off you will bend it quite easily. |
The centre strip is "snapped on" to trim clips that are pop-riveted onto the hood. To remove the strip, you lift from the side. I have similar on my MG Midget side strips. YOu insert a thin lever of spring steel into the gap between chrome strip and hood, having first put down some masking tape to protect the paint and lift gently. If you're nervous use a plastic spreader used for putting on cellulose stopper, it wont damage the paint. Proceed along the strip lifting from the side. DO NOT seize the strip itself and rip it off, it may well bend or distort and become scrap. Funnily enough, the clips on the side strip on the hood are totally different being threaded onto the strips and then the tangs of each clip are inserted into the holes and the tangs bent over from the inside.
