Default correct paint to use on the air filter cover

Can anyone please advise on the correct paint to use on the air filter cover on my 3.4 mk 2 ? (round pancake filter type). Obviously it's a silver paint of some sort, but I would appreciate some advice on where to source it etc

I'm not sure of the exact colour of silver, but if you can find what they call "hammertone" paint. (or hammered)

Universal® Hammered Spray Paint Product Page

There are probably a number of different kinds to choose from if you look even further.

it's a very light grayish silver color, not neccesarily "hammered" paint.

the same color as steel wheels of the period were painted.

It should be a greyish silver and not hammered, in fact the silver from Halfords is actually pretty poor "silver" as it is more grey, so it would actually be a good colour to use for the air cleaner.

the hammered paint was used in the S type and 420 air filter "mufflers" made by the company AC.

That's interesting, do you know why they used the Hammered on the S Type and not on the Mk2 ?

My 340 was a very late car, I don't know why the 420/S Type was Hammered, but I'm guessing that my air cleaner was sprayed at the same time the 420's etc. were being done.
Mine had a hammered finish on it and looked factory.
It was worn in many places, but there was no indication that there was anything else on it other then that.

Jeff right you are. Hammered paint was used by Jaguar and others to make large prominent stampings look good even if they were not perfect.

Are you saying that Hammered finish was standard on all Mk2's or just the late models or 340's ?

those giant mufflers used for the air filters in the S type were made by the AC Company / Firm, also the brake booster breather was made by AC, and in the S type they came painted the same ugly color of Austin Healey Light Metallic Green. (same color as Austin Healey engines were painted but hammered).

why hammered? maybe it was in fashion at the time, it is a very elegant finish for metal parts, but I think George Camp got it right, to cover imperfections in the stampings.

I painted my air filter muffler in Plum Red and the heck with it. Looks prettier than green.

Tilley with out getting into what was a 340 in the US and a 340 in the rest of the world my comments were to the pan cake filter which I believe was the original post question. For those they were def. hammertone or Hammerite finish in grey/silver. If you ever strip them back to metal the pressings on the trumpet ends are not very clean but look super with a coat of hammered paint.

Thanks George, I stand corrected, they didn't look hammered in Thorley's Original Jaguar book, so I have to admit that was my assumption.

Time to resurrect this thread.
Tried some of that Rustolium hammer tone paint, what a mess, it's uneven, lumpy in places, it looks just terrible.
Putting light coats on as the can suggests does not yield the right finish, if I put it on too thick, it dries at faster rates and the texture changes.
Some places look OK, while others have very little to no texture.
I'll strip it off and just Goober it on and see what happens.
Any one here come up with a good solution for the right look ?

I suspect that I will have to get it powder coated and hope that the outfit is big enough to carry the right finish.

Jeff are you painting with a brush (I have tried that and it does not work) or using a spray can? Spray cans do a great job but it does dry fast!

I used a spray can.
It says not to use over galvanized steal, so I'll check and see if it is galvanized, and if it is, I'll remove it.
I tried again with flooding it.
I'll post some photos.

forget Rust Oleum. the best hammered spray paint is made by HAMMERITE. Search for it online.

Hammerite looks promising, but there doesn't appear to be a Canadian distributor, the least expensive is from Newegg.ca at 8.99, but then they want 37.00$ to ship it.
I found another brand here _ Krylon; tried a bit on a small sample and it looks like it will work much better, it doesn't dry so fast like the Rustolium stuff, so the hammered affect happens more even with out having to really spray it on thick.
I'll update this thread when I know more.

Krylon makes excellent spray paint, I use it all the time, didn't know they had hammered.
