Decoding the Chassis Number on a M2
 

I just purchased a project Mk2, which was listed as a 1962. Using the "decoder" website that has been mentioned here many times - the car comes up as 1964 production.
Question: did the factory- tag number these cars sequentially from 1959 - 1967? Is there an alternative source to this "decoder" website with this info?
Note: I do realized the difference in the RHD vs. LHD models related to the sequential numbers. This car is a RHD model. Car# 168189

The car will be a 1964 3.4 Mk2 RHD the numbers were used sequentially, there may be a small crossover at the end of a year i.e. last week/first week if cars had extras that in theory may have put them into the next year, such as a car that started production at the very end of 1964 may have actually rolled off the line at the very beginning of '65, but would be a 1964 designated car. Do the engine and gearbox numbers match the car ?

The Car number will also be stamped into the cross rail just in front of the radiator to the side of the bonnet catch, if these all match up then you definitely have a 1964 car and the listing was not correct.

Jaguar also on occasion swapped a RHD body to a LHD body & vice versa to meet specific orders in specific colours. They never reused these numbers which makes total production numbers marginally inaccurate.

My car was converted LHD to RHD at the factory (its noted in its build history), I believe a similar thing happened to the first e-type but I wasn't aware that they did this regularly throughout production to meet order requirements.
