Mk2 1964 Rear Door Lock
 

Hi all,

When I bought my Mk2 22 years ago, the previous owner had removed the chrome door handles and locks. When I now try do a trial fit of the handles and locks I have found that the push buttons are missing. Probably re-chromed but not put back into the car.
I have started to manufacture the buttons but the rear handle lock mechanism has three indents as seen in the photo. My guess is a ball & spring built into the push button to keep the mechanism from turning due to vibration.
Any ideas would be gratefully received, thank you.

Hi Peter,
I just took a look at my L/R button assembly that is waiting for the handles to come back from the platers. Mine (from a 66 Mk2) have the same detents as yours but there is no obvious reason. The surface of the button where the detents touch is completely smooth. The button will freely rotate. Maybe the detents are there for a different application of the button? I carefully disassembled and reassembled mine and there are no missing parts.

Thank you for your reply, it did seem odd that there is no wear on the rear or front lock indents.
I suppose this part could have been used on a different car lock. I will now polish the buttons and have them chromed.

thank you for your reply, Valve Chatter is a very useful source of info as I am now working on the front locks and the spring loaded arm is missing.
I will keep searching the boxes of bits but if I don't find them I will reproduce them as well.

You have some patience to machine these parts up Peter, and a good workshop by the sound of it.
