MK2 Mystery Firewall Captured Nut

Hi folks,

I have a question for you. What is the purpose of the captured nut on the firewall in this photo? I have the same nut on my car, but I do not know its purpose. Is it perhaps used for the battery strap?

Thanks.

my S type has those too, there is another one to the left of the one you encircled.

my strap has two long 7/16" / 11mm bolts made of brass.

Lin, By "captured nut" do you mean it is securely attached to the other side of the firewall so the nut is fixed & cannot be lost?
I need to put a new battery in my 67 Mk 2 340, but have been afraid of losing the battery strap nuts to never-never land. (I could not understand why Jaguar would do that!)
Thanks

captured means either welded or caged.

Correctly with Thackery washers under the heads I believe.

yes, two thackery washers under the head and over the bracket foot. Same size as used in XJ and E types for the Hood Handle. .

Where does the second washer go Jose? There is one under the bolt head, which allows some movement against the bracket, and the bolts should not be done up so that the Thackery washer is flat, but where do you think the second one goes, not seen it and can't work out where you mean.

TilleyJon, I guess I mis-explained:

there are two thackery washers, one per brass bolt, One under each bolt head and it contacts the holdown bracket's "foot". (Not two thackery washers per bolt). .

Thanks Jose, that does make sense :)
