Default Number Tag Question

While working in the trunk (boot) area of my car this morning I discovered a small aluminum number tag that is held in place with two screws. The number on the tag is different from the car number or body number. It has an "M" followed by six numbers. The tag is located near the fuel pump side of the trunk. Does anyone know what this number signifies or is related to?

could it be the aluminum tag from the fuel pump? SU fuel pumps come with a tag.

Thanks George. Was that common practice back in those days? The tag was screwed to a vertical section of a panel that is part of the trunk (boot) floor and is located near the left rear of the trunk. I was just curious because the number doesn't seem to be related to any other numbers on the car. Once the restoration is completed, I will put the tag back where I found it.

Ted if you look in the rear seat pan you should also find a metal plate from Pressedsteel with all of their patents and such.

The photo posted by MK2 is the tag and location I discovered. It is more of a curiosity and George seems to have explained what it is all about.

Ah, I have found a couple of those, and I wondered what the plate under the seat was, it was a bit shot with cadmium corrosion on mine so I could not read it, but put it back for historic interest. Thanks guys
