Dear All,
I want to remove the alternator/PAS pump assembly from my Mk2.
The manual says to remove the nut/bolt at the adjusting link then the 2 nut/bolts at the mounting bracket.
I cannot see or feel the latter nut/bolts.
Simple question: after removing the adjusting link, do the other nut/bolts become visible after tipping the assembly to one side?
It’s very cold in the garage so I don’t want to spend time looking and experimenting….
Regards,
The bolts might become visible, but I don't think so. There are mounting ears at each end of the generator and they are the pivot point at the bottom. Looking from the front, if the top adjusting link bolt is at 12 O' Clock, then the mounting bolts are at about 8 O'clock. The photos here might help: https://forums.jag-lovers.com/t/gene...for-mk9/375817
The bolts are difficult to see or get to because of the room you have down the side of the engine. The front bolt is easier to get to but the rear bolt is almost impossible to reach with the power steering pump in place. You are better off removing the PAS pump which is held in place with three bolts to the back of the generator which then gives you room to get to the rear most bolt. This also allows you to hang the PAS pump to one side in the engine bay rather than having to disconnect the hydraulic pipes to remove it.
This is a picture of the bracket on the side of the engine that the Generator is bolted to and the second picture is of the generator and PAS pump in situ where you can just make out the shape of the bracket under the generator. This gives you an idea as to where the bolts are.
Lastly a photo of the rear showing that the PAS Pump is in the way to see and get to the rear bolt.
Just to give some feedback for others after doing the job…
- My alternator is bolted to the bracket on the engine with a single long bolt through both bracket holes
- After removing the nut/bolt at the alternator adjusting bracket, I could tip the alternator/pump assembly to the body making the above long bolt just visible
- I did in fact separate the pump from the alternator; tipping the alternator/pump assembly to both extremes gave enough room to loosen the nuts fixing the pump to the alternator
Cass: your photos seem to show a heat protector shielding the pump from the exhaust manifold. Correct? Do you know if that was standard on a Mk2?

Regards,
The Stainless Steel heat protector came with the car and I presume it is an original fitting to my car which is a September 1967 built S Type with the variomatic Adwest Marles power steering. The Eaton pump is the same fitted to all S Types though. I have never seen it on another Jaguar (not that I have really looked hard) and no one else in the S Type register has seen one. It is bolted to the rear of the pump with three small 7/16 bolts and there are corresponding holes in the flat plate rear of the pump. I have two spare pumps one has the holes and one does not so I assume again that they are there for this purpose and put in by the factory. There is no mention of the heat shield in the parts book so I don't even have a part number. All very strange but it does a good job looks original so is staying on the car.
If anyone else has come across the heat shield on an S Type or any Jaguar to be fair I would like to know.
