Replacing Auto with Stick shift, need to remove engine?

Hi
I've started collecting parts to replace the automatic in my mk2 with a T5.
I had not thought about this being an issue but now am wondering if this is possible without removing the engine? Is the auto trans tunnel bigger and therefore a bit easier to access? My engine is running perfectly and I'm in a home garage would rather not mess with the engine.
Thanks

I can't fully answer your question but the auto tunnel is certainly larger (wider) & has no removeable tunnel cover like a manual. Where there is a will there is a a way. You will likely have more trouble getting the Auto out than getting the Manual in. You will have to cut the tunnel for the gear lever.

I had a donor car that had been converted from Auto to Manual. (badly)

These are mainly S Type pics but give you some idea. (same floorpan from scuttle to rear of seatback) Sorry ~ car got partially burnt in a brush fire after we had taken what we wanted.

Modified Auto tunnel: (you need to make up a cover & sort out a gaiter around the gear stick. You also need to sort out the rear transmission mount & propshaft length ~ on the S Type the Auto console is quite different to the Manual ~ don't know on the Mk2)

This is a manual tunnel & cover.

BTW ~ If you are going to tip the engine back. Before you release the rear engine stabaliser. Take off the rev counter generator so it can't get damaged. The darn things are expensive.

Tremec T5 for Jaguar Mk2 (Longtail). For standard Jaguar bellhousing.

Thanks for the photos. I'm going to use the 5 Speeds bellhousing and a world class T5 from a mustang, so the shifter will likely sit a bit farther back, but that's OK. It almost looks like I could get to the upper bellhousing bolts from the top. My engine doesn't have a rear stabilizer since it has a GM 700R4 auto in it, and I run an electronic tach off the distributor, so no worries on either of those pieces. Looks like I should be able to go to everything without dropping the motor.

OK ~ great. When you said T5 I assumed you meant the Tremec T5. My bad. A friend moved to a transmission that moved the shifter/stick back 40mm & it works fine. Your setup does not have some of the usual hurdles so with a bit of effort you should be able to do without removing the engine.

So it's just cut tunnel & console, cover, rear mounting & propshaft ~ There are many length Jag propshafts due to Moss & Jaguar 4 speeds, Long tail & Type A "Compact" Short tail OD's & Auto. Sorting the right length propshaft is easy.

Don't know which rear mounting your car has: (different length springs & spring rates are available.)
