Thinking of buying a 3.8S - what am i getting into?
 

Ran across a '66 3.8S while doing internet search for something totally different, a '72-4 Alfa GTV 2000. Anyway, i'm now intrigued with the possibility of getting the Jag, always loved the lines of these. Assuming it's in good shape when i get it, what am I getting into on ongoing servicing? I live in Atlanta, where would i take it? What are they like to drive?

i know it's a list of basic questions, but i've found these boards to be good, quick reality checks.

I will make a reply since no one else has. I got a 66 just this May and have only driven a scant few miles, as it needs a lot of help. But I got it for its uniqueness. I couldnt remember having seen one. The little bit I've driven was exhilirating, even in its present condition. Parts seem to be a challenge, but not impossible to get- I was able to get a voltage regulator labeled as being for a Ford Tractor. As with anything, try to be realistic about what youre willing to put up with if there are flaws. You have to enjoy it or...... its no fun. Good luck, Jerry

A 1966 Jaguar 'in good shape' will have had a lot of money spent on it and the purchase price will reflect this. If it looks like a bargain, it will almost certainly need extensive work.

You'll see restoration threads in this section which show what can lie beneath beautiful curves, shining paint and gleaming chrome. They will also show that almost any Jaguar can be made good again.

I've been owning and driving Jaguars since the 3.8 was a current model. On the few times I've been back in a 60's or 70's model in recent years, the contrast in handling and performance between them and modern Jaguars is very noticeable.

It is either a rich man's or an enthusiasts car. The two extremes of paying a marque specialist to look after it or do-it-yourself.

Jerry sums it up very well when he says 'You have to enjoy it or...... its no fun'.

Thanks for the responses. It's such a classic looking vehicle. Ultimately, I think practicality will win out and I will likely go with an XFR once I return to the States...but I'm tempted.
