First time Jag owner! 2 weeks in :)

Hello all,

I just joined yesterday, I think? maybe Monday... anyways I posted an intro in the southwest subthread and then just saw this. I bought my 90 XJ6 two weeks ago and am really enjoying it so far (I have been carless for the past two years).

I thought joining you all would be a good way to learn more about Jags and get support and hopefully I can give back too at some point. I just read Jim's post on the "how to for noobs", so thanks again Jim. after this I'm getting my ride into my signature as suggested.

Thanks for the welcome!

Thank you for all the replies! I also appreciate all the information, I had my suspicions about it being an XJ40, it wasn't the first time I had seen that name pop up. Is it still a Sovereign model, or is the Sovereign the 4.0L model?

thanks again

GGG 07-24-2015 02:15 AM

Hubert,

XJ40 is the factory model designation although the vehicle will be badged as XJ6.

Jaguar used the XJ6 badge on Series I, II and III from 1968 to 1992, the XJ40 from 1986 to 1994 and the X300 from 1995 to 1997. This was very confusing for everyone! Dealers use the factory designations to distinguish between the three different models and the forum does the same.

Sovereign is the trim specification. A higher level Vanden Plas specification was also available.

4.0L for the engine size as Jaguar also fitted 5.3 litre V12's in the same body styles.

awesome, clearing things up

Thanks for the info Graham, appreciate it!

Hey this may be a little off topic but when I start the engine I'm getting a loud squeaking that eventually goes away, but will come back if I go over 2-2.5k rpms. 90% sure I need to tighten my alternator belt... any input? You guys got any tricks to tightening a belt with a limited selection of tools?

as always thank you

GGG 07-25-2015 02:19 AM

Hubert,

Temporary belt squeak on startup is common on Jaguars - usually if coolant has been spilled on the belt at some time. It seems to put a 'glaze' on them which nothing will clean off.

The noise coming back at over 2-2.5k rpm could be the same thing be may indicate a worn/dry bearing in the water pump or alternator. I suggest you ask the question in XJ40 tech forum. It's a few years since I had my XJ40 and members there will be more up to speed.

Graham
