G'day from sunny Perth

G'day All,

I've just signed up here, having bought a 1997 X300 XJ6 4.0 last November. Bought from an elderly gent in Queensland, it has done just 66,000 km from new and is in lovely condition. I had it fettled by Mike Gill-Bailey at The Independent Jaguar Workshop in Brisbane (very highly recommended!) before shipping it across the Nullabor to Perth, where I have now had a happy month of pottering through the suburbs doing my 20km round trip to work every day.

Apart from getting the headlining replaced (it's sagging over the rear seats), Mike did everything it needed after the car had hardly been used for 3 years. I did have Mike stiffen up the rear suspension a tad, upgrading it with the addition of a mono strut a-la-XJR, but otherwise my car is a totally standard, very late model (Aug. '97 build) X300 XJ6 (I wanted one with 3 proper seat belt in the back as I have 3 kids). All the superlatives about ride and handling of these cars ring true with me. My car is running Yokohama "decibel" tyres which seem quieter than I remember the Pirellis on my brother's 1993 car being. Fuel consumption is pretty tragic in the traffic (about 15.5l/100 km or 18.2 mpg) but the odd longer trip has seen a big improvement. Anyway, I only do about 6000 km a year and I get a 25% fuel discount through my employer so I can cope with that!

Everything in the garden would be lovely if only some drone in a Landcruiser hadn't stuffed his front bumper up my chuff last Monday night
- my first traffic accident in 20 years :icon_doh: At least he was insured and the car is walking wounded until it gets fixed. Shannons are fixing me up through a no-fault claim.

So, my first Jaguar after 30 odd other makes from Citroens to Maseratis. My friends think I've gone all sensible!

Look forward to chatting with everyone here.

Cheers, Gavin

Howdy Gavin,

Welcome to the forum! I love " I bought from an elderly person who took great care..." stories. Your friends will come around when they get their first ride in your kitty.

Thanks Jamey. Friends think I've finally bought something sensible and (almost) practical after some of my previous motoring money pits. The last love was a 1967 Maserati Quattroporte which was utterly gorgeous and ruinously expensive to keep! Other "interesting" past vehicles have included sundry Citroens (including a DS), Alfas, a Lancia, BMWs (4), an Audi Quattro, Triumphs, even an old Land Rover .... But now with school fees to pay I wanted something that was reasonable to buy and combined a bit of classic "feel" with being a decent proposition as a daily driver. So far I think I may have made an excellent decision!
