Hi there. I'm trying to get talked out of getting a late 80's or early 90's XJ6 or XJS. I currently live in Northern California. Would love to hear your thoughts. Thanks for all the insights you guys provide. Happy motoring.

Standard enough ask.

My advice, and am way down here, is that there is fundamentally nothing wrong with teh broad selection you asked about.

NONE of them will be "unmarked, fully maintained, dealer serviced, drives lke new, or whatever", and that is fact.

There will be PAGES of "catch up" items, and that number will depend on the selected car.

A V12, as in an XJ-S, would be my choice in a heartbeat, and allocate the same money as you paid, AT LEAST, for that "catch up". Once sorted, awesome car.

The 6 cylinder (XJ6) you mention, will get yoi the XJ40 style cars, and I have little passion for them, so will make no further comment.

IF, you step up to late 95 to early 97, and select the X300 6 cylinder, totally different beast, and stil one of the BEST cars Jaguar ever made.

I'm really leaning toward the XJS. I've been reviewing Mr. Palms guide which is a great.

Hi Nick........I own a '93 xjs 4.0 conv. there were 799 made for worldwide distribution. my suggestion is you check the rear tranny mount because they are known to fail in xjs's and cause transmission failure. The kit runs about $200.00 and the install about $100.00. The original appears to last around 65k miles. You check by pushing up on the gearbox. If there is a little give, that's normal. Alot of easy give is not. It's definitely worth the effort.
Aside from that, the xjs is a fun car to own and drive. I really like mine. Not quite as much as the '69 xke I once owned but all in all a nice car.

Here is how I would talk you into or out of getting a 25 year old Jaguar...

1. Are you willing and able to do most of the work on the car?

2. Do you have a budget to pay someone do it (and that budget will be quite a bit higher than you acquisition cost)?

If the answer to #1 is yes, then I wouldn't talk you out at all. Though sometimes byzantine or unique, they are very satisfying to work on and there are lots of resources here to help. Parts are readily available and with some good googlefu can be found for reasonable prices.

If the answer to #2 is no, that's the end of the line. Don't do it, don't consider it.

If the answer to #2 is yes, I wouldn't automatically move forward. At this point and time, you will be spending more money than can be justified by the cars' current market values. So it will be a matter of heart over head, and you should be going in with eyes open.
