My first Jag- a 1998 XJ8

For whatever reason, about 6 months ago, I started searching for a Jaguar. My first idea was a Vanden Plas from 1998 up. Craigslist finally produced the winner- A one-owner XJ8 possessed by an 82 year old gentleman who had a long string of XJ's. It was always garaged and mechanically was the best example I have come across to date. There are a couple of minor scratches on the rear bumper, a few pits in the front from travels, but the car at 10 feet looks brand spanking new. Most people have no idea how new or old it is.

It has 76k and all records came with it. I changed the oil immediately with mobil 1 (10w30) then promptly took it for a 200 mile ride. When we arrived home, I checked the oil just to see if the level was correct and if the color had darkened. To my surprise, it was as clean as the moment I poured it out of the bottle. Now, that's my kind of motor.

To all of the long-time XJ guys on this forum: Is there anything that should be looked at immediately? The only thing I could find out-of-order so far was the trunk lights. Is there a mercury switch that triggers them or is it a standard switch? The other puzzling thing is that there is no transmission dipstick, yet there is a drain on the pan. It seems you can drain the fluid, but where is the inlet? Any recommendations on the 5-speed automatic. Should I just leave it alone or take pro-active measures?

My first impression through the canyons of Northern Colorado is that this vehicle handles exceptionally, accelerates smoothly and had no issues with the thin air despite a full load of occupants. Truly an amazing first ride for a 13-year old car. My question is- why are these cars so cheap? They depreciate like rocks made of lead and I've read all about the transmission expense. Even if your factor in a new transmission, this car is still one hell of a bargain!

Welcome to the forum,

Sounds like you find a good deal. have you managed to get the old gent exorcised?

For you tech questions head over to the XJ8 section and ask the experts.

Thanks Norri! Yes, I did a bit of "freshening" on the interior to change the native scent... :icon_wink:
