New Member with 2001 XJ8

Hi to all,
I just purchased a 2001 XJ8 Westminster Blue with just under 18000 miles. I have been reading here for a while and familiarizing myself with the forum.
My car was built 11/00 and I assume it has steel liners. I see upgrades to the timing tensioners and guides, the thermostat, and the water pump, are recommended.
Should I do this soon or wait until the car has a few more miles on it? I have been a member of Miata Forum for many years, and with support and guidance from members, I have base lined three cars and learned to do some wrenching including
timing belt
, water pump, crank and cam seals,
suspension
, and many other things. I hope I will be
able to wrench on my new baby. I am impressed with the amount of information on this site, and I am so happy that I have a place to learn about my car. If you have any
maintenance tips or references or information about my car, I would appreciate any and all guidance. I see that I might need some cam locking tools, an
, etc.

I am very happy to have found this forum and look forward to reading, learning, and corresponding. Thanks to anyone who cares to respond and offer guidance to another car enthusiast.
Regards,
Mike

Welcome, and well done.

If it were mine, the tensioners, and pump etc would ALL be done NOW. The tensioners fail, dead engine. Overheat from the others, dead engine.

Lock down tools will be needed.

Head over to the XJ8 Tech Section, and take a read through the various stickies at the top, lots of info in there.

Thanks Grant Francis,
I appreciate the recommendations. I notice that there is a Lincolnguide that is the same one as on the Jag. Can anyone recommend vendors to get the parts and also the lock down tools needed. I plan to change out all the fluids. This engine is a bit intimidating because my wrenching experience has been on timing belts and much smaller engines. I ordered a shop manual but will look to this site for information, videos, and guidance.
Thanks

Welcome to the forum Mike,

Good to have you with us at Jaguar forums.

No need to worry about the cylinder bores but the two biggest killers of the Jaguar V8 are failing tensioners and overheating. If you must prioritise, don't delay on tensioners.

It sounds like you've already found the appropriate model forum but if not, follow this link XJ XJ8 / XJR ( X308 ) - Jaguar Forums - Jaguar Enthusiasts Forum to the X308 forum for help, advice and information.
The 'HOW TO' thread at the top is a good place to start for information on regular issues.

Hi Graham,
Thanks for the recommendations, and I updated my signature. I'm researching the timing related issues and think I will change the guides and the tensioners and the water pump. Looks like a pretty big learning curve and I want to do no harm. For now, I'll change the fluids and keep reading. If anyone can direct me to a video that they found helpful, I would appreciate it. I do know how to use the search function on this site as well as google for specific sites. There is a lot of information to distill. I've detailed the car, and now it is time to refresh the fluids.
I will check out the Midwest sub-forum.
Thanks again,
Mike

Thanks for the warm welcome from everyone.
I've been reading, and a wealth of information to sort through. I'm happy to have found this forum.
I'm definitely a newbie to Jags, and don't even know how much oil to fill. My service manual should be here soon, and I have this forum.
