Default New member intro - just acquired an XJC

Hello all. New to this forum, as I've recently acquired a 1976 XJ6C. Have some experience with Jaguars, as the household includes an 87 XJ-S, but this XJC has some issues to solve.

I'm in Temecula, California, which is about an hour north of San Diego, an hour west of Palm Springs and 30 minutes from nowhere.

Welcome to the forum abgwin,

Good to have you with us at Jaguar forums. Worth spending time and money to resolve issues on an XJC - the best of the early XJ's.

Follow this link

Here's some more photos and details about my XJC.

It's a 1976 XJ6C, US spec. I believe I'm the fourth owner but that's based on intel from the seller who only had the car a short time. It appears to have been originally Greensand or possibly Primrose with a Tan or Cinnamon interior. The interior is pretty sun baked, so I may be wrong about the color. I was told the second owner had it changed to Regency Red soon after buying it but that paint has failed and is peeling badly.

Other than that and a sad modern stereo, it is remarkably unaltered.

I haven't driven it very much as I suspect the front bearings need to be replaced (hubcaps were warmer than I'd expect with just a hint of a rumble) and though I never saw the temp gauge go very high, I found a large slick of antifreeze under the car the next morning. It appears the radiator caps aren't correct, so new are on order and I will be changing out all the hoses soon.

Primary issues are passing smog (haven't tried yet), getting the HVAC sorted, tracking down that leak, getting the electrical gremlins under control (wipers, dash lights, etc) and swapping out the faded and peeling dash with a repro one the previous owner included. Oh, and speedo isn't working either.

Previous projects have ranged from VW Type 34 Karmann Ghia to Lancia Beta to Fiat 850 Spider, so while not my first rodeo still plenty to learn.

Thanks in advance for all the advice and questions I'll asking.

The XJ coupes were always special. Produced in small numbers and at a significantly higher cost than the four door saloons, it was the one I really wanted but had to settle for XJ6 Series I and II saloons when they were current models. In the end I never did get one.

Serious body rust was the problem with them here in the UK with our combination of rain and road salt. Yours must have spent all its time in the more forgiving West Coast climate. I'd have gladly swapped the effects of sun on leather for the battle against rust!

Get that coolant leak resolved a.s.a.p. Overheating can easily give head gasket issues or worse.

Graham
