Default New member- Seeking advice for 1st Jag

Hello,

I've entertained the thought of owning a Jaguar ever since I learned to drive, but only began to do so seriously in the past few months after finding this forum. I have yet to purchase my first Jag and hoped some of you might have some insight. I originally thought I was interested in a early 2000's S-Type, but after getting some feedback from the local Jag mechanic who tried to talk me out of it, I've expanded my thought process a bit even to the point of looking at a similar vintage XJ8. This would be primary transportation with short commutes throughout the week and 2-3 trips of 200+ miles per month.

I' d really appreaciate any advise to a newbie looking to buy their first Jaguar. I know they are opinions and favorites of each of these fine automobiles, so any input is welcome.

At the risk of offending people, I'd avoid the S type as well. The XJ8 is a great car and you can get some wonderful examples at a decent price.

Go for a 2000 or newer if you can. The best bet is to start test driving some different models at dealers and see what grabs you. Then find one privately with service records.

Welcome to the forum.

Or even slightly earlier with a late low miles X300. They are great cars and have a good reputation for reliability as evidenced on here.

Good to see you.

Welcome to the forum,

Good to have you with us.

I can't help with the XJ8, but if you still want an S try and stretch to a post facelift 2003 on model, as they had a lot of the earlier problems sorted.

It comes down to which model you feel most comfortably suits your needs. The commute and longer monthly trips won't wear any of them out!

Absolutely critical is service history preferably backed up with a folder of paperwork proving regular attention.

The only ones I'd avoid are introduction year of any model. The later along the development cycle, the better and more reliable the vehicle.

Enjoy the search and hope you're soon here as an owner.

Graham

Welcome to the wonderful world of Jaaaaags.
I respectfully disagree with your mechanic about the S-Types. They're just as reliable as the next one. Check out cars.com and input your location and have at it.
You might also go to the S-Type section and look around, lots of very good diy guys there who are very helpful.
There are extended warranties available to take care if things go wrong.
Good luck

JayT2,

Thanks- that's good to know. I'm sure finding the right car that's been maintained makes all the difference. I'm currently looking for Jags close enough I can drive and form an opinion of what really appeals to me. Thanks again for your input.
