Howdy Folks:
Dr. D here (yes the D did stand for Death.. corporate death but that's behind me now) I'm coming up on 62, just sold my 66 Skylark conv. and my wife and I are considering ~02 XKR (maybe XK8) conv as a replacement soon. I have driven the "8" but not an "R". I welcome any comments pro or con.

Welcome, our resident forum members can lead you the way as to what model to go ,but I would go for XKR which means you get more power lol

Welcome aboard DR. D, I guess that most of us would say go for the XKR, but perhaps an XK8 may be more manageable.

You will find great people in the XK8/XKR section to help you decide.

I just bought my first jag, an 04 XK8. Looking back why didn't I get one sooner? I looked at the XKR's and opted for the XK8 mainly for insurance and extended warranties. I spent almost a year finding the right one. I missed 3 good ones in the process but it was worth it. Good ones are out there you just need a little patience.

If you've still have the need for a rush of speed that only a supercharger can deliver, don't even look at the XK8s and go for the R.

Me personally, never drove the R and was thrilled for the 290 HP of the normally aspirated version. But, I did come from a 6cyliner jeep, so maybe that analogy isn't fair. LOL

If you can stretch the budget for an 03, you'll get an extra gear, a new generation 4.2L engine (still used today in the newer cars, though 'improved') and HID headlamps.

Do your research in the FAQ thread and enjoy searching. Winter is perfect timing to find a convertible.

I went for the 'R' - very happy with it. I got an 03 too - which means not having to worry about tensioner and thermostat housing.

+1 on the FAQ - it's been an invaluable resource for me since the time when I started looking.

Pros with the R (for me):
Never lack of power on public roads, supercharger whine

Cons - on 03 model and above:
Brakes are expensive - especially the rotors, 20in tires are also expensive - although I see some options there

Item of note:
If you're test driving one with 20in wheels, make sure to get a feel for the ride. I got a chance to drive an 03 XJ8 with stock wheels - the ride quality was so unbelievably smooth - like riding on a bed of goose feather downs. By comparison my XKR feels like riding a blender full of metal bolts. I suspect the stock 18in tires would have a smoother ride.

Default Thanks for the inputs

Thanks for the input folks.

Things I will consider:
  • If (my wife and) I really need the kick factor of the "R", the firmer ride, & SC whine (She was not impressed with the kick of the XK8 we tested ....87000mi )
  • Wheather to wrench a $15-$20K (96-02) or just mostly enjoy a $24-$30K (03-06)
  • OR.....Should I wait for "my" economy to get better and then consider an 07
Again, thanks for your inputs and if you have more, I am all ears.
Dr.D

Welcome. I have been very happy with my XK8. I have an 02 and have yet to do the tensioner upgrade. I was a little disappointed with the pick up of the 8 until I pressed the "S" button. Makes a big difference. It gets pretty good gas mileage with it off though.

Welcome. I've driven the "R", in a 2002 Xkr 100, and it was terrific. I was also lucky enough to drive the 2007 R. Honestly, the extra BHP meant nothing to me, and I actually preferred the older model. Of course, I don't know much of the Xk's being an X300 guy myself. I'm sure you'll find the right Jag. They are all terrific.

wait for an R model. I have a 02 XJR (same engine as an XKR would have) and it is shockingly quick. My mom has an XF with the 300 hp engine (close in hp with an XK8) and it is disappointingly slow.

I've had 16 Jags and 4 of them were R cars. '02 XJR100, '03 XKR, '04 S-type R and an '05 XJR. I much prefer them. My wife could care less. It just depends if you have the need for speed. I do...

Thanks for the upgrade. Sorry I took so long to reply but I was busy buying my 2002 XKR roadster . The particulars:
  • Quartz / Oatmeal / Black Top
  • 56.5 K
  • Sirius/XM
I cannot believe that it is actually mine. Give me a little more time to gain my composure. I have been invited to Northlake and may be there next time.
