Newbe to this forum

Hi from Grand Lake Oklahoma.
I am just in the process of finding an XK8. 90% sure I'm buying a red one, 60k miles and extremely well kept. I had an XKE roadstar V12 in the early 80s and had to sell it because of a divorce. Obviously can't afford one of those at today's prices but the XK8 is in my range and maybe even more 'cat-like'. I am aware of the water pump and timing chain issues with pre-2000 cars. I will change the water pump as soon as I get it home. Not sure if this takes the worry out of the timing chain problem, might get some hints about that on the forum. Also would like any other things I should attend to on these cars. Anyways, I look forward to new friends and shared experiences.

yAs an Old Motorhead, my advise is "If it ain't broke, don't fix it"

Welcome.

I suggest an opening of the engine to "eye ball" the top tensioners. If they are version 3, good forever.

Trans fluid change would be my #2 on any list.

Good luck.

When you say 'open the engine' aren't you talking about major surgery?

I searched for my baby for almost 2 years. I was looking for an XK or a XKR Coupe in black, or British Racing Green, preferably with black interior. It also had to have low milage, and one owner with a car fax history of proper maintenance and no major accident reported. I finally found one online in NJ about 65 miles from home. My point is that this is a toy, a fun car, I have a beater, a grocery getter, don't need it, but as soon as I saw this one, I fell in love. The firstroad trip will be off to a friends home in CT, about 110 miles from me for Thanksgiving Dinner. I took my time, and found what I wanted. As far as the water pump and other issues I have said before as an experienced Motorhead, "If it's not broke, don't fix it".

Update, I finally bought one. 99 XK8 w/28000 original miles. Very clean car. Couldn't be happier.
