xj6 4.0 sov 1996 top left dashboard light comes on and engine stalls

Hi,

Wondered if anyone can help, as stated I have a 4.0 jag Soverign 1996, 71k miles from new surperb example, however recently the top left hand symbol (looks like a pump of some sort) on the dash comes on and the engine dies. You can restart it and the light is still on and stalls each time you come to a halt. Eventually it goes oout and all is well, well until the next time that is.

What does the symbol mean and how do I rectify it?

Appreciate any help.
