I think you'd refer to them in the U.K. as "sheds". Can't remember where I saw that, feel free to correct me.......

A hooptie is a "beater" car; worn out, dilapidated.

I first heard the expression decades ago up here in the Pacific NW. When winter weather gets really bad you park your nice car and drive your "hooptie" ....if you happen to own one or more of each.

Cheers

Well, there you have it; just goes to prove that you are never too old to learn something new.
Thanks peeps.
Originally I thought it was a spell check version of 'hootenanny' which is either Scottish or something to do with banjos and pigs.
We don't get out much in Wiltshire.

Ohhhh!! A HOOPIE!
Everybody in Montana knows what a Hoopie is. We always had one or two on the farm, as Doug says, a beater the kids learned to drive in, herd cows with, jump irrigation ditches with, race the neighbors' hoopies.....

If it means what it means in California, it's not quite a beater as such. Generally it's an old big Luxury car like a Caddy de Ville or Buick Park Ave.that's been slammed or airbagged and "customized" in an Urban mode. Big wheels, loud stereos, equally loud paint. Still I hope someone goes and reports back.
