Visited SF back in 2012 with my young family ... my thoughts then were what a **** hole of a place. How can people suggest its a beautiful city?
Thankfully we stayed out in San Mateo which was lovely But SF? No thank you.

Fishermans Wharf ... what a dump.
Chinatown an even bigger dump.
Bums everywhere, stores where you had to leave your bags at the front desk to gain access ... no we'll pass thank you!

Was glad to leave there. Regrettably, we had to drive through the city to get to Muir Woods and beyond ... now that was nice, the place not the drive.

Our Jaguar club did a drive to the Muir Woods a couple years ago, as one member was a botanist specializing in Redwoods in his working life.

Not being originally From California, we always thought Redwoods were on the North Coast and looked forward to the trip. I Never imagined these would be down on the Peninsula!

What I saw of SF that time firmly set in my mind that it's a Giant Slum with all the usual attendant, um, Features thereof! We decided we're Never going back.

San Fransisco is what you end up with in a rabidly Liberal city awash in welfare. Lots of tech money spread around so the elites can insulate themselves from the everyday people. Constant talk about equality and compassion but it's all talk. What use to be a tourist hot spot is now a dangerous dump where you have to be careful where you go. And it's getting worse. Seattle, New York, Los Angeles, Portland all headed down the same path.

Yeasagree. Was in Seattle last year and that is not the best either but much better than SF.

Is San Francisco really that bad?
I've never been there but I hear people say that all big cities have big city problems and San Francisco is no different. than the rest.
Not that it excuses anything, but they're saying that San Francisco is no different than the others.

Yes, the streets are a jungle. You don't take casual night time strolls in the city and watch your back (and feet) during the day.

.
There are even small city problems in small cities but amplify those by the dense population and open flaunting of laws and you have San Fransisco .... or Portland .... or Los Angeles ..... or Seattle. Drugs are openly used and supported by the city. Human trash and feces everywhere. Think of one giant homeless camp and you have SF. NOT the tourist destination it used to be. Give the Progressives enough time and votes and you will have the same across America.

Sounds like San Francisco has changed from whatever it once was and has become more like Philadelphia and New York City.
They have all the same problems except I don't see poop all over the place.

It has been estimated that California has 1/3 of America's homeless population thanks to weather, generous welfare, liberal laws and even more liberal policing. California pays more attention and money on prisoners than the truly needy and gives the homeless more rights than property owners. San Fransisco was once an elegant city teeming with vibrant people and it's turned into an urban nightmare where the elite and wealthy are bunkered up in their homes, cars, offices, and night spots. The dichotomy of Silicon Valley money, and there's LOTS of it, and the needy is stark.

I wonder what San Francisco will look like in 10 or 20 years.
I mean, how long can that go on without something dramatic happening?

Forever if the elite turn a blind eye and bunker up in their homes/businesses and limit their outdoor activity to "safe" places (literally with guards and police around). These are the same people who criticize society for not taking care of the homeless, drug addicts, poor, unemployed, and vagrants. I have friends who live there and claim all the fuss is for naught but admit they don't feel safe in the city and it's getting worse. You have to understand that SF is the epitome of a Liberal city. No one is responsible for themselves and money can make anything go away..... even if disappearing is just an illusion. All they do is vote more welfare and believe that is the answer. And there's enough money to throw a couple percent of their income at problems, not even miss it, and think they're doing the right thing. Welcome to Socialism.

Yeah, but there has to be a point when the rug isn't big enough to sweep any more problems underneath.
When the bad parts expand and the good parts get so small that they can't exist anymore, I think something will break.
We will just wait and see.
I'm just glad I'm 3,000 miles away.
