1997 Jaguar XK8 For Sale to Fix to Part Out

7 Attachment(s)
Greetings all,

I have a 1997 Jaguar XK8 for sale that you can either repair or part out.

ASKING: $2000 (all reasonable offers will be considered) clean title in hand.[

LOCATION: Savannah, GA

The story... the car had a minor engine leak about 4 years ago. I took it to a mechanic here in Savannah who told me that it would cost me $3000+ to pull the engine out and get to the leak. I wasn't able to do that so, I parked the car for about 3 years. It was left out in the elements so the convertible top needs to be replaced. The clear coat has also begun to peel. No dents, but some chipped paint. The antenna was broken in a drive through car wash but still works. The interior is in good condition Has about 152,000 miles on it.

New tires have been placed on the car a year ago, but they only have about 50 miles on them.

It was taken to a repair shop to be worked on but they are having problems reading the codes... I have spent over $2500 trying to get it back running but noone seems to know what is wrong with it.

It has a brand new battery, battery cable, spark plugs radiator and some other work done it in the past 8 months. It was driven maybe 20 miles and then the "Engine Fault" light came on.

I just don't have the time or resources to fix it. It will start and drive but then goes into "limp" mode or shut off.

Please contact me by email if you are interested or have any questions. I have more pictures.

Thank you.

Shame it was left in the elements, especially with that palace of a garage. ;)

Please do not sell it. The "limp home mode" is an inherent problem with the early XK's and is a very easy fix, it is just an electronic sensor failure. Any good diagnostic electrician will be able to sort that for you quite cheaply. With regard to the oil leak, I would suggest that it may be a leak from the cam cover gasket as the AJV8 is pretty much bullet proof, again that would not be an expensive fix, maybe $300, it just involves taking off the cam covers and replacing the gasket. The guy that gave you that quote is obviously an idiot with no knowledge of XK's. No way on earth that you would need to remove the engine, he is talking through his ass.

PS I have looked at the pictures and I am sure that the bodywork can be fettled without a respray. In respect of the roof, I don't know as my XKR is a Coupe.

But what I will say is that these early XK's pre 2000 are becoming very desirable classics now and will only go up in value. I think you should keep it in my humble opinion

Many Thanks Steve...

My husband also told me not to sell it. I appreciate your input... I had just become frustrated. But, I love that car. I have a mechanic in Louisiana who use to work on it. He is a genius when it comes to these cars. I think I am going to haul it there and let Him work his magic. Thanks again.

As For the Garage...

I Agree about being left in the elements. Unfortunately at the time we didn't have a garage. 😕. It was beautiful before this... it will be again. Lol! I hope.

Hello Menaya

Please do not sell your XK8

The limp home mode is just an electrical malfunction that can be fixed cheaply, there is nothing wrong with the engine and the oil leak is probably nothing too much as well. Normally just a leaky perished gasket.

Thing is you have a beautiful very collectible car now. Don't worry about the bodywork, that can be easily fixed, a good bodywork specialist can strip down the laquer and re apply it and fettle and polish it back without any need for a respray. The main problems on the early XK's were chassis rust, so I would get the underside cleaned and inspected and fully undersealed with a good quality underseal resin. This will only cost you $200 max and will protect the underside for life. Obviously I live in England where we have a lot of grit and salt on the roads in winter which will rot the chassis.

Sorry but may I ask again what is the mileage?

At about 70k you need to have the timing chains and tensioners and the auxiliary chains replaced and also the suspension bushes both front and rear, the whole lot will cost about $2000. But that upgrade will last a lifetime. The leather seats can be refurbished to new for about $400 and the alloys can be refurbished to new for less than $300. Sorry I am just quoting the equivalent in GBP here.

Put it this way Menaya, you have a beautiful English V8 muscle car which is so stylish and different from the US boys Mustangs, Corvettes, Chargers and Cameros.

If you sell it then you will only regret in 10 years time when you see how valuable they have become. If it is relatively rust free then you really have to keep it. The 4 litre AJV8 is one of the best engines ever made and the auto gearbox equally so.

Please please keep your XK8, will be very happy to give any advice you need in my very humble and limited knowledge.

I will send some photo's of my 1999 XKR if you want. I have had it for 8 years now and my independent Jag specialist mechanic thinks that it is the best series 1 XKR in England now, it is perfection IMHO.

Just little bits at a time, that is what I did over the years, a labour of love XXXX

KR's

Steve
