04 XJ8 ZF transmission in an Stype R
What are the differences between the S type R 4.2 and the Xj8 4.2 transmission? I have the latter and may have to replace the former.
Thanks in advance! |
If memory serves, the drums and clutches are different for the supercharged car. Use the search function.

It looks like there are a couple clutches different and perhaps the TC- does anyone have a definitive answer? I *could* tear them both apart to confirm, but was hoping I didn't have to....
If I can swap the TC and then plug it in I would be a happy man. I could have sworn the main boxes were the same for all applications and the valve body or TC and tail were changed for each application? |

TCM has to be flashed unless you swap yours into the replacement trans. You can put a SC ZF6 unit into an N/A car but not the other way around. If you have a SC engine you need to source a ZF6 with a SC designation on the label. |
Got it thanks!

Circling back on this- I sourced a valve body from a good used STR and changed the fluid/filter. Totally fixed all my problems, runs like a champ again. I also believe it was underfilled by about a quart and the filter/fluid was original (very thin)
