2001 s-type transmission
 

After recent service at dealership (replaced vacuum tube, coils, cat-converter) I started getting the dreaded gearbox fault message (car has 77k miles). Dealer says it's just bad luck so soon after the previous repairs and wants $10k for a new transmission (which is more than the car is worth). Can I get a rebuild at a regular transmission repair place? Do rebuilds hold up and is there any chance it's something less catastrophic.
