Default 2002 S-Type Sport stuck in forward gear

I have a 2002 S-Type Sport. It had started not going into gear when shifter placed in Drive so I would shift into 4th to get it going and bring it back to drive. A couple weeks ago I was putting her through the gears, shifting down to 2nd, 3rd and into 4th when it started acting up. I managed to get it home but now it will not go into reverse. In park it will crank but appears to be in a forward gear. In reverse position it seems to be in neutral other positions are a forward gear, cannot find reverse in any position.

Is this the plastic part that has broken?

The car only has 64,000 original miles, looks new but I wonder it the plastic piece has dry rotted with age.

thanks,

Here is some info.

I would suspect the selector lever or cable is faulty.

Another vote for the shift cable.

First attempt adjust it following Bob's directions. It is a known problem that the cable can stretch. Then you need to replace.

Have you checked the bolts that hold the cable to the transmission?
