Default 2003 S Type R key fob

Hi guys,
My key fob has stopped working despite a new battery. Hence I have to use the key manually to open the car by putting it in the lock and turning. I am aware that I need to take it to a dealer. They have quoted me around $300 for a new fob and $80 for reprogramming. Am I able to buy a used fob and add my key to it and get that reprogrammed hence saving the $300?

Yes you can, the key is held in with a small pin that you just drive out, but you probably don't need to,
The fob and key/transponder sections can be separated so you just need to replace and programme the fob.

I still have a bunch of new OEM case/electronics of the key fobs that work on the 03 and newer STRs. I've been selling them now and again on E-bay for $50 a pair. I can post images if you are interested
You would still need to get them programmed.

Dear Joe

Thank you. I may well be in touch once I've spoken with the local Jaguar service department to see if they will reprogram for me without me buying their fob.

Just for added peace of mind, I bought a transponder on ebay for $30 last year and had the dealer program it. Works just fine, no need to pay those ridiculous dealership prices (except on the programming which is a ripoff)

Just as a thought, a local European import specialist (not Jag just Euro cars in general) reprogrammed both of my fobs for 30$
