AC compressor fan issue
 

My AC works fine while i'm driving. When I stop sometimes it works sometimes it doesn't. Been doing this for a few months now.
So when it wasn't working at idol I checked the compressor fan an noticed it was not spinning. I waited awhile started it up again and the fan was spinning. Then it stopped working. I hear clicking every five seconds. Not sure if I should just replace the fan or is it something else. When it works it works great. Even when the fan is not working if I drive it it's extremely cold air that comes out.
Thanks for any advice you can give me. Don't have the money to go to an AC shop right now.

When you turn your AC on that fan should be going full speed. If not find a used fan assembly at the scrap yard or ebay.

Are you talking about the big electric fan behind the radiator? If that is not operating correctly, you've got bigger problems than just marginal AC performance at idle. That same fan draws air through the radiator and prevents the engine from overheating at low speed when there isn't much ram airflow.

I had this fan fail several years ago on my '02 V6, about twenty miles from home. I was able to limp home by taking the long way so I could avoid most stop and go traffic and keep moving. Below 30MPH or so, the temp gauge would start climbing above the center mark, but it would quickly drop back down once I got moving.

What is your temperature gauge doing when all of this is happening? Please be aware the dashboard temperature gauge is deliberately misleading, as detailed at the following link, so don't rely on it. This is from the XK forum, but the general principle is the same on the S-Type:

Basically, the temp gauge should stay centered during all conditions of normal driving. If the needle climbs above the middle mark, the coolant temperature is above the normal range and is approaching overheat. Above a certain point, I think the AC is automatically switched off, but am not sure if this applies to all models and years.
