Hmm, how do we know he's telling the truth? After my warning I'd move into his guest room if he ghosted us, he quickly replies with some likely story about how everything is suddenly good now. Call me suspicious...

On a serious note, while I have witnessed the “hibernation” of the fob-recognition module (whatever it is called) on my other current Jags, my travel-addled brain did not apply this to the S-Type. I think this was partly because of its faulty, unusable door lock cylinder (sadly, not an issue of lubrication). In the past few days I have had to wake up both my Sportwagon and my wife’s X-Type sedan by using the key in the driver’s door…but I had not remembered the fact that there was also a trunk lock on the S-Type (which, by the way, is in desperate need of lubrication).
One more point: this S-Type 4.2 does indeed have the pull knobs for the rear seat release.
But all is well and I am grateful for all the comments and suggestions provided.
Good to hear that you solved it.
I think you wrote above that you would open the trunk with a size 10 spanner - sadly I forgot to write that you better take various sizes along - I believe it is size 12, but good that your key fog worked again.
So: Hibernation is indeed a real thing...
