Defunct charcoal cannister
 
Hi All,

My 2001 S-type has been behaving very well the last three months and having a splendid time driving her. Now the check engine light popped on and the charcoal cannister in the EVAP system has gone south, and, oddly enough, the dealership can't find a replacement. Does anyone have any suggestions on where to look? They will install a replacement I obtain - no warranty of course. Any assist would be greatly appreciated!

What fault code are you getting? The typical problem is the canister housing cracks and sets a code for an EVAP system leak.

Some forum members have reported good results by repairing the housing with epoxy. Doesn't cost anything to try, but this will be negated if paying for labor.

Once you get the part number you can search also....i see a couple vendors in the UK as having new old stock available

Marychef: Could you ask your mechanic to look and see if there are any Ford part numbers on the unit that is being removed from the car? I would be willing to bet that the charcoal canister was used on other cars that were at least partially sourced from the Ford parts bin...

Hello,

Here's what the tech said: "Performed fault test and found code P0455 gross evap leak. Performed smoke test and found leak at evap canister vent solenoid. Found solenoid to be stuck open. Part # needed XR854459". Replacement part is apparently no longer available, tho some have indicated a Ford part could be compatible.

Here we go a-hunting . . .

Thanks so much! Went to Jagbits - this part is backordered. Not sure about going with used - don't want to replace it again in 6 months. Found new at a couple other sites - now just need the tech to weigh in before I plunk down some cash.

This car is higher maintenance than I am!

Hello all,

In the never ending story of the stuck open vent solenoid on the charcoal canister for the EVAP system, apparently the part # XR 85459 is for the purge solenoid, not the vent solenoid. The tech who usually services my car looked at some of the parts I found on line and indicated they were not the correct part. I have been to multiple parts sites and have not found a part number for the vent solenoid, nor have I found a schematic drawing that shows the two solenoids. The check engine light apparently cannot be turned off until the defective part is installed, so should I chance it and drive the car, I might not be notified of other engine issues that arise. It's killing me not to drive my Jag. Any help that any can offer would be most appreciated! Thank you!

Although the two valves are physically located together, they are shown separately on the diagram. The purge valve is shown near the bottom center of that diagram. The other valve, near the upper right corner, is labeled "Evap Canister Close Valve" but I think that is your vent valve.

You are right on the money Karl ...cannister close.....solenoid vent valve. Same thing, different wording .....ran into same issue on daughters Kia

Thanks much gents! However, finding this little beastie is proving extremely difficult, especially since there are no part numbers listed. And the note at the bottom: "EVAP Canister Close Valve and FTP Sensor – OBD II vehicles only" - can someone provide clarity on this? Not sure what that means. And there are no Jaguar graveyards anywhere near my home.

Very frustrating, but all part of the deal. I still love her.

Your car is OBD II so don't worry about that.
I would second the used part recommendation. These are not parts that always fail but with age it is always possible.
Don't forget the crack idea too?

That means these parts are only installed on cars sold in markets that must meet OBD II standards for monitoring the emission control systems. Any car originally sold in the USA will be so equipped.

To find the part, eBay is your friend. A quick search for "Jaguar S-Type charcoal canister" showed several promising results:

You'll have to weed out the list by model and year, but I find a broader search is better than getting too specific. Look at the pics to make sure the external components are included. Also note some of the pics showed Jaguar part numbers, but I believe that is for the entire assembly. You may not be able to find the individual pieces separately.
