The Jaguar Select warranty on my car is expiring next week so I've been looking at extended warranties.
Heard that AAA was a good source
Received the following estimate from them:
'08 Jaguar S-Type [2WD (not Supercharged)] Current Odometer Reading: 53000 Thank you for considering AAA Southern New England for your vehicle protection needs. We value your trust and strive to offer you the best products and services available. We understand that purchasing a new or used vehicle is a major financial investment. With this in mind, we want to offer products that can save you hundreds, even thousands of dollars: Mechanical Breakdown Protection (MBP). In addition to this protection, it provides peace of mind for life's unexpected turns. There are far too many exclusions on extended warranties on our aging S-Types, not to mention the high premiums as you just discovered. I've always come out much further ahead financially by setting aside a maintenance fund in a money market account and simply drawing from it as needed. I allow $3,000 per vehicle and as long as I perform the bulk of the work myself, that money usually lasts the duration of the vehicle's stay in our stable....

+1. I've been doing it that way since the early '80s.

I have to say that I agree with Mikey. I drive older vehicles and handle any expenses that arise, expensive or otherwise.
However, when we bought our '05 STR it had an extended warranty through Jaguar (Typical aftermarket warranty sold via dealer) It had previously been covered under Jaguar Select.
The best $50.00 I could have spent was to transfer that warranty to my name! We got about the last 7 months of coverage. I was initially skeptical and figured I would write off the measly $50.00.
Guess what? That winter of 2012 the Nav. screen started to scroll at any ambient temp. Below 50 F* (Sorry I live in CA, people wear parkas here when it's 50)
Long story short, Jaguar replaced the Nav. control module and the IP dash interface! $7k!
Other warranty work was done at the same time, including a minor trans. pan gasket leak, lower front control arms, and a new LF HID headlight assembly due to auto adjust gear failure.
Total warranty work was $11k! The warranty company really cried Uncle over this and had let the service advisor know that they would consider the vehicle "totaled" and issue a one time pay out to settle the loss of the bill went any higher.
Just my one experience with aftermarket warranties. Wow!

IVE BOUGHT a warranty once, and i currently still have it in place on our 2006 BMW 550I....i believe it was about $3000 for 4 yrs and covers the motor and tranny and most things that are bolted to it....ive used it for a water pump so far... it is however transferable and refundable if i should desire....peace of mind to cover a major malfunction...plus i can spend the $3000 upfront and have coverage from day one. im still putting money away each month by paying for it, but i also have $10-15,000 k of possible coverage for the $3k spent...i just dont get the $3 k back if i dont use it....its a gamble, or insurance... i pay car insurance every month, and have never used it...
