Unhappy First problem with 03 3.0 Stype: restricted performance than check engine

Hey Guys,

So my dad had my car this morning and when he got back he tells me: He was taking off at a light and all of a sudden the engine jerked and a restricted performance message came up and the car wouldn't accelerate past 3k rpm and wouldn't go past 45 mph. he pulled over, turned the car off/on, and when he turned it on the restricted performance went away but the check engine light turned on. I tried to disconnect the battery for 5 min but that didn't do anything. Anyone have any ideas on this? I tried the search and couldnt find much..I'm going to my buddy to pick up the codes so ill let you guys know by later tonight.

Any help, advice, and/or ideas would be greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance.

BTW car specs/info:
2003
3.0 v6
5 speed manual
80k miles
never been in accident
Original battery (looks like it but idk because previous owner was very close to jaguar dealer and had every service done there so might have been replaced--also gonna put it on the charger tonight just in case)

Without codes...? The CEL may be a result of failed O2 sensor(s) or vaccume leak i.e. leaking intake manifold runner solenoid motor, etc. Please let us know what you dig up from read codes.

You don't need a jag-specific tool to read the codes about the engine.

A manual gearbox over there - wow!

Hey guys so just an update: My buddy is still getting the chip set(dealer is closed still). So I went to pepboys and they picked up the engine codes: p0171 and p0174. The guy said something about the banks running lean. With that can anyone give me some ideas on what to do next? Thanks in advance

They start P0, so they are generic codes and Search here or on google etc will get you lots to read.

Yes, lean. For your Dad's car 95% likely an air leak. Probably one of the hoses (such as PCV elbow). Lots of posts here if you want to read them, with fixes (and photos).

If you find it's not that, come back and likely someone will help more.

Try several searches. Each of the words:
elbow
hose
leak
lean
hiss

pcv won't work as it's only 3 chars. Crazy, yes.

Look in the FAQ part, too.

Thanks for all your help Jagv8. That will be my next step if the check engine light comes back on. My buddy took a look and said i should try to clean the MAF sensor. I Cleaned it with some MAF cleaner(grey can at autozone) and replaced the air filter. Funny thing: when i pulled out the filter there was alot of sand(?). Anyways i blew it out, put it back together, reset the check engine light, and 70 miles later it hasnt come back on. Maybe this will help some people. Ill let you guys know if anything changes.

The PCM double-checks before it flags codes so they often take a while to reappear.

If it's for a 3.0, probably, but why not ask Gus whose site that is? I have a V8. I've never actually seen a 3.0 engine except in pics.

Guys, remember this is a MY2003 new engine type. This vacuum leak is not on issue on this model 3.0. The pictures from Gus are from the first edition.

Ciao William

So your saying that the vacuum leak isn't a problem for the 2003+ 3.0 engine?? if so, what should I look at next?

No, they happen on post 03 cars as well... Less so than the early cars, but they still happen... Stick with the check...Always rule out the simple!

Search on the fairly obvious:
hose
leak
hiss
elbow

May not be the usual fault, but worth having a look.

Ok so took a look at the hoses etc..everything looks great no tears, cracks, hisses, or anything but a normal working engine. Yet that stupid check engine light came back. What should i do next?
