Fuel filler Neck Filter
Hi all, searched for this rare item but my tech thinks the filter on the fuel filler may be clogged causing a slight gas vapor stank. Car just turned 10k miles but sat for 18 months. Tank was drained and injectors cleaned-runs great but for the fuel smell. My guy took everything off underneath and the fuel lines look fine with no gas stains anywhere. I'm getting code PO442 and PO 456, 'small leak'. He also suspects the charcoal canister. Any thoughts?

Is there such a filter? I'm doubtful.
The workshop manual and code PDF (each a free download) list all the known causes. You may as well read the list (no such filter is included) and work through them. A smoke test may help. |
Did you check for leaking/seeping injector seals?
|
I didn't but the injectors were purportedly cleaned and I'm imaging, removed. The smells nit underhood but midships from underneath.
And there must be a filter for gas filling ventilation, no? Will look up the parts list. |
Follow procedure in JTIS for inspecting the Evaporative Emission Control System for possible cracked or leaking vapour hoses, or raw petrol in the carbon canister(s).
If the fuel tank was drained, are all the hoses and fittings secured properly? |
What year is your car? The 2005 S-Types had a fuel tank replacement recall due to leaking fuel at the filler neck / tank junction....
|
Apparently as my tech was down there today and pulled apart anything in the way and reported it was all dry with no fuel stains.

2007, Jon. |
You can use Topix (Home | TOPIx) to enter the VIN of the vehicle to determine if there are any open service actions/campaigns.

So, my battery cable saga at least reset the fuel cap code thus far. There's still slight whiff of fuel on the right side by the rear door. Maybe some mileage will open up some pores in all the systems. Sitting for 2 years is not the best treatment...

It was the top seals on the sending unit of the gas tank. Remember that the gas tank is below the rear seat. Right where you get the smell. |
So an update: my code cleared after the battery debacle and disconnecting for a few minutes while changing cables. I still occasionally whiff of fumes form the right midships outside but never inside.
I do think many gremlins will resolve by using the car which has only 300 miles in almost 2 years. |
To be flagged most codes need to occur under similar conditions on 2 trips. They appear as pending codes on the first trip so that may well be what you have.
Even an elm327 can be used to report pending codes (such as P1000 or P1111 - an S-Type always has one of those two). Suppose you have a leaking seal, then it may well never set a code. In summary, there are plenty of things that won't set a code (though they may set a pending code). |
